Whether you immigrated to Canada several years ago, or you've arrived here only recently, you have a story to tell. Maybe your story will provide comfort to someone who is experiencing culture shock and homesickness at this very moment; or maybe it will educate others who have never experienced international travel and relocation before. Either way, yours is a valuable story to be told.
What motivated me to create this KickStarter campaign? Three things:
1. Like so many others, I have felt disheartened by the seemingly one-sided portrayal of immigrants being shared by a certain office south of our border over the last year. I've felt discouraged by the focus on building a wall to "keep the bad guys out" rather than fostering a sense of community and inclusion for all the good people who want nothing more than to create a better life for their families. The public needs to be educated about the true process immigrants must go through before they can ever step foot on Canadian/American soil, as well as the obstacles they continue to face once they're here, and the people who have gone through these things firsthand may be the best ones to provide that education to the rest of us. I believe this will cultivate a society of better understanding and compassion for one another ... by giving immigrants a voice and a worldwide digital platform to share that voice with others. 2. In 2016, I experienced culture shock for the very first time, and it gifted me with an empathy I didn't have before. It hit me like a tidal wave one evening, during a six-month working vacation in Asia, and seemed to come out of nowhere. Although I had been coached ahead of time that culture shock is a perfectly natural byproduct of international travel and that no one is immune from it during extended trips, I was still caught off-guard by the sense of sheer loneliness and home-sickness that swept over me that night. It stayed with me for four or five days before finally lifting, and I was lucky enough to be staying in a country where everyone I met greeted me with a friendly smile and a helpful hand. It made me wonder how on earth people get through something like that when they're fearing deportation, or facing any form of racism, on top of everything else they must deal with when uprooting their lives to a whole new country and culture.
3. I have an inventory of book publishing guides in storage right now: 2,000 copies of How to Publish a Book in Canada and another 2,000 copies of How to Publish a Bestselling Book. These paperbacks not only teach aspiring authors how to write, copyright, publish, sell, print, and distribute paperbacks and hardcovers through the traditional "offline" channels; they're also filled with valuable tips and tricks to help you sell books of all kinds online, including ebooks and audiobooks. I would like you to have a copy of one of these paperback books along with an opportunity to write a 500-word essay for this new ebook anthology for immigrants. Tell us the most important thing you think we need to know about your immigration experience. Educate us. Inspire us. Help others who are going through the same thing.
Below are the two rewards being offered as part of this KickStarter campaign along with a chance to have your 500-word essay published in the ebook anthology. You can click on each image below to read the several positive reviews both books have received and even "sneak a peek" inside them, free of charge, to decide which one you prefer.
What Will the Rewards Be Used For?
In addition to covering the courier/shipping costs to get the above-mentioned books shipped out to each of you, the rewards earned from this KickStarter campaign will be used to pay for the team of professionals required to produce a professional-grade ebook anthology like this: a copy editor, designer, proofreader, ebook conversion specialist (to convert the book to both .MOBI and .EPUB formats), and project manager.
The goal of this KickStarter campaign is to earn $10,000 which will cover the costs to create and publish one ebook anthology. Any additional funds earned up and above that will go toward additional ebook anthologies.
Once edited, designed, proofread, and completed, each anthology will be posted for distribution free of charge through Kobo, Kindle, and E-Sentral. The goal here is to freely share this information with others rather than profit from royalties. It is also an opportunity for aspiring authors to earn a publishing credit through a reputable hybrid publisher that may, one day, lead you toward a successful publishing career of your own. Each contributor will also be free to share their own individual stories on their own websites, blogs, et cetera, so long as they credit the original source anthology.
Risks and challenges
The greatest challenge is getting these paperbacks out of storage and into your hands in a timely fashion. Our team will do our absolute best to get all of these books mailed out within one month's time, and we thank you in advance for your patience with this.
The next challenge will be the amount of time it will take to copy edit each essay and then send them back to each respective author for your approval via email. An official project time-line and more information will be sent to you once we receive your 500-word essay so you know exactly what to expect along the way, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation with our deadlines so we can produce this ebook in a timely fashion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
