About the project

Tech addict, nomophobic, phubber – each month brings new words that we use to describe those of us that have a problem spending some time away from a screen. In fact, chances are that you could quite quickly point out which of your family and friends could do with some time away from their tech. And that’s where The Unplugging Box comes in. A little kit packed full of inspiration to convince the tech addicts in your life of the benefits of regular unplugging.

Each box will contain:

1 x book of unplugging

1 x set of 15 unplugging manifesto cards

1 x set of 5 unplug invitation postcards

But why unplug?

We used to celebrate technology’s ability to help us gain knowledge, stay connected with one another and save time. But now there is an increasing feeling that our device dependency has gone too far.

E-mailing or browsing the internet used to be compartmentalised. Now it’s available to us in our pockets 24/7 on an increasing array of portable devices.Whilst it might make us feel more connected, scientific evidence is showing that our brains are being affected by the constant onslaught of information and our attention spans are getting shorter. There is no doubt that technology has improved our lives and the world would be far worse off without the internet but we need to start thinking about the effect our constant tech use is having on our brains and our personal relationships.

There is a growing group of people around the world who are recognising the power of taking more time away from their tech. Their quest is to master technology and not be its slave. They are expanding their capacity for creative thinking, reflection and living in the present (as opposed to tweeting or Instagramming about it). And The Unplugging Box is an attempt to play a part in expanding this movement.

It is a movement that recognises we need to start being smarter about using our technology more responsibly. It’s no secret that large tech companies like Google and Apple are urging employees to address this same issue and promoting the benefits of unplugging and of using mindfulness practices.

About us

It wasn’t a ‘eureka’ moment but rather a slow realisation that I did indeed have an addiction. A screen addiction. I’d fooled myself by smugly declaring to everyone that I rarely check my Facebook page and had never developed a desire to tweet my daily musings to the world. But I ran to my phone as soon as an e-mail or text message came in and couldn’t get through the day without regular updates from various news websites and blogs. Soon my wife began to express concern at my behaviour and I began to investigate. As a marketing consultant on the move a lot, I need a smartphone but was it healthy to stare at the screen at every available opportunity?

Once I investigated the consequences of being constantly connected, I wanted to be able to share my knowledge with my friends and family in a way that was different enough to attract their attention, easy to digest (especially for those of them used to 140 characters) and could spark some fun and engaging debate. And of course, be something that they could experience away from a screen!

I gathered together a small team of likeminded people and, after months of working through various ideas, The Unplugging Box was born. It’s a simple little kit you can gift to yourself or friends and family with the goal of helping them master technology.

Unplugged Society

The Unplugging Box is hopefully just the start. We are also launching Unplugged Society, a company committed to helping individuals and corporations recognise the importance of unplugging and its power to shape our minds for the better. Follow us at www.unpluggedsociety.com as we work to grow the unplugging movement.

DETAILS

The photograph you see shows the prototype. We have worked with our two printing houses to source premium, heavy-weight paper stock for the booklet and cards and sturdy ‘paper over board’ construction for the boxes.

The boxes will be approximately 8.5 inches in length, 6.25 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep.

The contents of each box will be:

The book of unplugging

An easily digestible booklet covering:

Why we should care about how much time we spend staring at screens

Why unplugging can make a difference

Easy steps to take to make unplugging easier

Unplugging manifesto cards

Each one of us has different areas of our digital lives to focus on. We’ve created a set of inspirational cards that you mix and match to create your own unplugging manifesto. Pin them up next to your desk, stick them to your refrigerator or wherever you need a daily reminder. And given that ‘attention restoration theory’ states that simply looking at a picture of nature reboots the brain, we’ve printed some appropriate imagery on the reverse.

Invitation postcards

Got excited about the idea of unplugging? Use the invitation postcards to send to your friends and spread the message by putting good old-fashioned pen to paper.

And not forgetting the box…..

A sturdy box that you can use to hide away your smartphone, take some time away and unplug from your tech.

Where will your money go?

We have to fulfil a minimum order quantity of 1,000 pieces with the printing houses to get our first batch of boxes produced at a realistic price.

We also have to pay the design and copywriting team for their time.

Status

We have sourced our printing houses for the items contained in the box and the manufacture of the boxes themselves.

We have written the unplugging manifesto cards and sourced imagery.

Work has begun on writing the book of unplugging and it should be complete by the beginning of October.

Our design partners are on standby, ready to prepare the final artwork for the printing houses.

Risks and challenges

We have over ten years of experience dealing with designers, copywriters and printing houses, so foresee low risks in terms of getting the production completed on time.

The only challenge will be if any of the printed materials come off the press at a lower quality than we would like which could delay the final delivery by a few weeks due to re-printing.
