Help Jofis & Mighty Oak release their first record: the Jofis remix of 'The Eagle the Dragon & the Bear' by Alpha & Omega.
I recently produced a remix of 'The Eagle the Dragon & the Bear' by Alpha & Omega. They're a well known, successful and much loved dub reggae band from the U.K, who've been on the scene since the 80's. You can hear an edit of the remix on my Soundcloud page. I sent Alpha & Omega (A&O) a copy of the track. They loved it and gave me permission to upload the track to Soundcloud, and they reposted it on their page (meaning at the top of A&O's page is my tune!). It quickly had 100s of plays, lots of really positive comments, 'likes', and many people following my page and praising my other tracks too, which is amazing.
A&O agree that releasing the tune properly, on vinyl, is an excellent idea. A&O related music sells very well, they have quite a following. Also, in case you are wondering, vinyl records are still alive and going strong in the reggae scene, all over the world. We agree that 500 7" records would be a good number to start with. When I sell all 500 copies, there will be enough to cover all costs and press my next record, so getting the ball rolling.
I have worked very hard and spent a lot of time on music these last few years, and have received high praise from those reggae fans who have heard it. It just needs to get out there. Having a physical record is the best tool for that, as it grabs the attention, unlike C.D's or mp3s. I will send copies to the reggae soundsystems and I'm confident they'll play it at their dances, thereby showcasing my music. I am working alongside up and coming soundsystem Mighty Oak.
The £850 target covers £678 for pressing the records, plus Kickstarter's fees, and a little contingency fund left over - see 'Risks and challenges' below. The A side will have my mix of "Alpha & Omega ft. Reuben Master - The Eagle the Dragon & the Bear" and the B side will have my dub version. They'll have full colour labels with artwork by an extremely gifted calligrapher/artist friend of mine. His artwork will also be on the t-shirts! His work is in progress but I'm sure it will be beautiful.
This is my dream! Putting a record out, getting into the scene, playing gigs, being inspired and creative. This is also a grass roots project you'll be supporting - musicians making their own way, their own bespoke products, and bypassing the record industry.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This has been a complicated project to work out, in part because it's possible not everyone will want a 7" record (for some odd reason, some people don't have record players)! So, as production costs of C.D's and digital downloads are low, I hope I can offer these as alternatives and still have enough money to press the records - it depends how many people want C.Ds. They are the least preferable option for me, as they cost money and will contribute least cash to the vinyl pressing. I hope that perhaps you might buy the record even if you don't have a player, and see it as a collectors item that helps support the cause, but of course I still need to offer an alternative. Vinyl purchases will still include a digital download link as well.
Otherwise, so far I can't see any major risks. I've chosen a reputable pressing plant, found good t-shirt and sticker printers, badge makers, and everything else is up to me to sort out! Once my total is reached, I send the tracks to the pressing plant, and they take around 3 weeks to manufacture the records and send them to me. Then I'll post them to you.
I will then produce any t-shirts stickers and badges, after sales of the first few records have covered costs. I'll contact you to check your address and, if you want one, your t-shirt size.
Love and thanks.
