About

Then you are much like I was 2 1/2 years ago...considering becoming a coder at the age of 42.

I've written 'Not Too Old To Code' specifically for anyone over 30 years of age (or close to it) who's considering becoming a software developer.

It is the one guidebook you'll want to read if you're trying to decide if a new career in coding is right for you.

1. Help you decide definitively whether or not you should pursue a career as a web or app developer.

2. Teach you about how to intelligently go about making this change and what to expect along the way.

  • I want you to know if training to become a web or app developer is a smart and viable option for you, and how to best go about it.
  • I want to help you through the mindset considerations and the emotional game of learning to code as you progress from novice to professional.
  • I want to bring people with more life experience into the world of software and help dissolve ageist attitudes in the industry, in whatever small way that I can.
  • It's the book I wish I could have read at the age of 42 when I was trying to decide if this career change was a real possibility for me.
  • This book is 90% finished, with 29 of 32 chapters written.
  • Chapters average about 1260 words, with the total book length shaping up to be around 150 pages.
  • I will be completing the book and having it professionally edited while the Kickstarter campaign is running.
  • The ebook will be available shortly after the campaign ends, in May or early June.
  • I anticipate that the print copies of the book will be available towards the middle to the end of June.
  • The audiobook will be available sometime in June.

Total Funding Goal:  $5705

'Want to know what you're really getting with this book? Here's a chapter-by-chapter summary.

1. The Coder Who Doesn't Know It Yet - Find out if you're primed to be a coder and you just don't know it yet.

2. Would I Make a Good Developer? - Learn about the character traits of 'good' developers - many of these may completely surprise you.

3. For the Right Reasons - What's really behind your motivation to learn to code? This is your gut check.

4. What Is It About Code? - I discuss the challenges of learning to code, as well as suggestions to ease the journey.

5. Legends, Stereotypes, Myths - Let's deconstruct the myths and stereotypes surrounding what a coder is, so that more people will want to be one.

6. The Imposter's Bacon - I'll discuss why it's worth it to become a coder, even if you have to live with some imposter syndrome.

7. A New Educational Paradigm - Discover the new, accelerated routes to becoming a coder. This is an introduction for Part 2 of the book, including chapters 8-18.

8. My Story - This is how I came to the decision that it was time for me to learn to code.

9. Teaching Yourself to Code - It's a long and winding road you may not personally and/or realistically have time for. Kudos to the people who've taken or are taking this route. I discuss why it doesn't generally fit well into the time frame alluded to in the subtitle of the book.

10. Online Tutorial Sites - These sites will help you dip your toes into the waters of software development. Use them, but know they can only take you so far.

11. University Certificates - The right certificate program may help you become job-ready, but do your homework and talk to people so that your expectations are realistic.

12. 6 to 16 Months and 1000 Hours - Let's discuss the amount and quality of time it takes to go from '0 programming experience' to employable...and why.

13. Why You Need a Mentor - The new educational paradigm for learning to code involves paid mentorship and organized, fast moving learning tracks, where relevant and currently in-demand skills are taught.

14. The Bootcamp Revolution - Since 2012 or so, the way in which many people begin careers in software development has changed dramatically. The coding bootcamp is at the heart of the new educational paradigm.

15. Bootcamps Online - Various coding bootcamps offered online are discussed in detail.

16. My Online Bootcamp Experience - Looking back, this was the tipping point into my career as a developer. I'll tell you about the whole experience.

17. In-person Bootcamps - Find out about the ever-growing crop of in-person bootcamps, how to research them, how to get in, and how to afford them.

18. My In-person Bootcamp Experience - I followed up my online bootcamp experience with an in-person coding bootcamp in Seattle in the fall of 2014. Here's my report.

19. The Chicken or the Egg - An introduction to Part 3 of the book, where I discuss the question of which comes first: the professional developer or their coding experience.

20. Build Something - If you want to stand out as a new developer in the job market, build something unique with code first. It doesn't have to be earth-shattering, but it does need to be you.

21. Write Something - This is about how you can stand out by sharing your thoughts in writing with the world as you learn to code.

22. Teach Something - Learn why consistently turning around and teaching the concepts that you've just learned yourself may be your ticket into your first job.

23. "Vol" - Volunteering and working the odd jobs related to coding, while you learn, will take you to your intended destination.

24. When You Know 'You're Ready' - I share a personal story about becoming an artist that relates to how you'll know when you're ready to become a professional developer. This begins the last section of the book: Part 4, comprising this chapter through the end of the book.

25. Understanding the Job Hunt - Here we take a look at the unique hiring assumptions and rules that apply in the world of software, specifically in light of Chapter 19's discussion.

26. The Elephant in the Room (A Primer on Ageism in Software Development) - This is a frank discussion of ageism in tech: where it comes from, and why it's bad for everyone.

27. Own the Elephant - Don't try to hide your age and never apologize for it. While it may be an obstacle, it's not a deal-breaker. This is about being you and owning it.

28. On Cover Letters and Resumes - There's power and freedom in prioritizing the elements of your job application. These are my personal do's and don'ts that have always worked for me, over a period of decades.

29. It's Still Who You Know, Sometimes - In the end, job hunting is always about working with people. Don't ever rely on your mad coding skills alone to land that first gig.

30. Where the Jobs Are - I'm a bit hesitant to write a chapter about where to find that first coding job...it's a bit of a fast-moving target. But I offer my best advice and observations about this job market. Additionally I discuss where, when and how I found my first job (and why it's still the right place for me).

31. Interviews and Whiteboards - Whether you ever experience this or not, you should be prepared for most bizarre hiring rituals you've ever seen in your life.

32. You've Landed the Job, Now What? - This is the beginning of your new life of daily learning as a developer, not the end of it. Act and think accordingly.

Risks and challenges

The only real risk I see in not finishing this project is if I die or go into a coma. Otherwise this project will be completed and the rewards will be distributed as estimated.

This book was conscientiously written by a person who was brought up to fulfill his commitments and keep his promises. That's who I am. I finish what I start.

I've put careful consideration into the reward levels and the funding goal and want to deliver real value.
