I've been involved in the roleplaying game industry for most of my career. I run my own freelance illustration company, James Stowe Illustration. Four years ago I started an online comic project called Sidekick Quests that combined my experience with roleplaying games with my love of illustration in a project that I could share with my kids and ideally other geeky parents could share with their kids.
Initially I created a simplified version of 4th Ed. DnD for my then 6 year old son’s birthday party. I had been toying around with some long form comic ideas and once people really started responding to the work I did for that party I decided to expand upon it.
And now here we are. I really want Sidekick Quests to be a living roleplaying game. I find the idea of a comic that can be played as an ever changing and expanding roleplaying game setting is something I’ve always wanted to play. And if it is also a way to introduce a new generation to tabletop RPGs, all the better. It was from the ideas and solutions I worked into those initial sheets that I developed Sidekick Quests, both as a comic and as a stand alone roleplaying game for kids. Two of the characters from the sheets (the ranger and the bard, see above) actually converted directly into characters in the comic (those being Benton the Scout and Dalea the Amateur Minstrel respectively. I have always enjoyed world building, so taking those sheets and creating an entire world around them was one of my favorite parts of the process. I have pages and pages of notes and thumbnail sketches about the World of Adventur (the setting of Sidekick Quests) and its denizens and lore.
Sidekick Quests is one of the great joys of the internet. Part roleplaying game, part web comic, it's unique, and delightful. Kids and parents alike will love James Stowe's lively, wonderful creation - as my daughter and I already do.

(James Stowe’s) world and characters captures imaginations in young and old alike. Sidekick Quests is doing a huge part to seed the next generation of tabletop gamers with positive messages and healthy table habits that encourage inclusiveness and fair play. You cannot go wrong laying down your hard-earned dollars on this campaign.
Brian Patterson - creator of d20Monkey
(Sidekick Quests the Roleplaying Game) feels like the best game of DND you played as a twelve year old indoor kid, in all the best ways.
Sidekick Quests is engaging, dynamic, and everything that a kid's RPG should be. It's got old-school charm, indie sensibilities, and is just plain fun.

James took what could've been a one-off internet meme and turned it into an earnest love letter to fantasy adventure.
Risks and challenges
This is James Stowe's very first Kickstarter. While the updated comic and script for the adventure are complete the 10 bonus pages, art prints, and maps still need to be created and the adventure copy needs to be edited and laid out.Every publishing project carries risks. Sidekick Quests is created, illustrated, written, game developed and directed by one guy, James Stowe (with some amazing assistance from his editor/internet guru Anna Izenman and writing/playtesting help from his family) If James were to be struck my lightning or choke on a ham sandwich, it would have a big impact on the completion of this project than a larger company might see. Sidekick Quests uses outside suppliers and shippers for printing and manufacturing, which involves possible risks and delays there James can’t foresee or control.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
