Turning Heads for all the Right Reasons.
Inspired by nature and handmade by Balinese artisans, S A Y A Designs is a brand new heart fuelled venture launching a unique collection of hairpins. Using root wood salvaged from old plantations, each hairpin completes an amazing cycle, as every purchase plants up to 10 endangered tree species back into the rainforests in Indonesia. What's exciting is that this is only the beginning!
Let us present to you the journey we are beginning with our hairpins, show you the craftsmanship behind them and how they are supporting positive change.
How it works: Select the reward level you want on the right, click the green button to back our project and be part of making this happen! Most reward levels are only available to a limited amount of backers, so act fast!
Important Note: On Kickstarter you can only 'back' once. If you would like multiple items or want to buy one for a friend, we suggest buying the 'Bundle Rewards'.
Starting with the Passionate Pursuit of the Ethical Hairpin.
Hello, I am Victoria and I created S A Y A as a medium for exploration. With a background in visual arts, mixed with a deep love for nature and craft, I wanted to create things we can treasure that tell stories and act as reminders of what we believe in. Creativity, collaboration and compassion are all at the core of this journey and what's exciting is that it is only the beginning! I hope to build S A Y A into a platform that can do much more.

We are working hard behind the scenes to create a platform and build a network of like-minded creative and courageous advocates all working hard to make positive environmental or cultural impacts on their communities big and small. We want to share and feature all those stories of what people are doing to better their world around them to inspire us.
We believe being environmentally friendly is fashionable in itself. Through S A Y A we will create excitement around issues we believe in. We hope to invite others to learn more and get involved with environmental and wildlife conservation by adding to the beauty in people’s lives by creating things they can treasure that have stories to tell. The time for change making is now and we can’t wait for you get involved too.

The Beauty of Hair Sticks is in Their Form and Function.
Hairsticks are the original hair tool and we are bringing them back. Anthropologists can see the earliest cave dwellers used everything from thorns, sticks and bones to fashion crude hair pins. There are endless ways to wear them and they are so easy to use.
We will be sending out our favorite tutorials during the campaign, in the meantime take a peek at our Pinterest account for some guidance. We really think they look best when you make them your own. Experiment!
Timber is only an Environmentally Friendly Material if it is Consciously Sourced.
Legally many hardwoods are still commercially sold and are often undocumented. I wasn't prepared to source wood until I had some validation, this was the complicated part. Searching for solutions, I came across Made & Wayan, sculptors digging up and recycling root wood from old plantations across Indonesia. The roots were left behind by loggers harvesting trees on large-scale production sites. They take hundreds of years to decompose and have little value for the soil. Using this waste material we are having as little impact on the environment as possible.
Each Hairpin is Designed by me, Handmade with Love and Backed by a Commitment.
We Source Salvaged Root Wood Left Over from Plantations.
Being handmade, the story becomes so much more than the product. It becomes the link and connection between cultures. Each piece is carved out by hand. Then sanded down to the finest grain using simple tools and techniques.
We have Partnered with a Micro Garden who will be Supplying our Seeds, Training Farmers and Communities to Support their Ecosystems.
Kickstarter doesn't allow raising funds for charity! That's true. The funds you share with us will be used to create and deliver your pledges. Anything extra will go towards growing the company. Planting these trees is our pledge to our partner organization, resulting from this campaign and will be funded out of our own pocket.
Over the past year, we have visited multiple forestry projects, attended sustainability conferences and sat with local artisans, to try and understand the bigger picture of deforestation. The UN sustainable development goals for 2030 recognize the immediate need for protection and restoration of global ecosystems, I think we all do. There are thousands of active environmental organizations who are passionately working at setting greater greener standards. I was fortunate to meet many of these good spirits in Indonesia and this is where I took a chance to act on an opportunity.
This Is Where I Took a Chance.

Risks and challenges
Our primary challenge is spreading the word. While there is always the risk of manufacturing delays, we also face potential delays based on hindu holidays and the monsoon rains. We have produced prototypes and have spent the last year preparing for this moment. Our manufacturers have centuries of experience, had time to experiment with our designs and have been collecting materials ready to go.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
