About

About:
We want to create a book for high school students that teaches them how to stay safe online (and why it’s so important).

You taught your child to look both ways before crossing the street…have you taught them the tips that will keep them safe on the internet?

Modern technology presents an unprecedented danger for our children and Hacked at 17 will present true stories of victims of online identity theft along-side online safety tips so that they realize the importance of protecting themselves. It teaches them to protect themselves and make informed choices about their online activity even when you can’t be there to keep them safe.

Keeping Kids Safe
Keeping Kids Safe

As much as we want to always be there to protect our kids, with the advent of social media, they are often interacting in an environment that we can't see.

Although it is nearly impossible to keep up with all of the apps and websites that our children may be using because technology changes every day, there are general rules of thumb that apply in every situation. We recognize that the internet can be such a great resource for education and entertainment, but we also realize that there are real dangers associated with its unsafe use.

The stories in this book have been contributed by people who wish they would have read something like this when they were in high school.

What topics will be covered?

We will be covering topics such as sharing personal information, sharing inappropriate content, and what to do if you are being cyberbullied. Each story will pertain to a specific online safety topic and will be followed by a page devoted to explaining an actionable tip for how to protect themselves from that danger.

What will the book look like?

Soft cover Dimensions: US Trade 5.5”x8.5” Length: About 150 pages

What age range will enjoy this book?

This book is written specifically to appeal to high school students, and will contain some material that may be inappropriate for those younger than high school, but anyone older than 14 would benefit from the online safety tips in this book.

An Excerpt on the topic of hacking:

“I still remember how excited I was when I got my parent’s permission to start my own Facebook account - it was all I wanted for my fifteenth birth-day. Everyone in the world seemed to be on Facebook except for me and I couldn’t wait to post pictures, share my thoughts, and add all of my friends. Finally, at the start of high school, my mom allowed me to use her email address to make my very own profile! After every football game or homecoming dance I would rush to share the pictures I had taken and see if anyone had posted any pictures with me. I loved reading the comments from my friends, quickly replying to each one. And then I got hacked.

I didn't understand what happened at first. I tried to log in to my Facebook account with my email and password, but I got an error. I tried again and again but no luck - someone had changed my password and now had control of my profile. All of a sudden I realized that all of my pictures and comments, the ones I had so much fun sharing, were in a stranger's hands. I no longer had access to look at my old posts and I couldn’t make any new ones. I was locked out of my own life.

Not only could the hacker see everything that I had posted, but they could also read all the private messages I sent to friends - including messages to my boyfriend. It was hard not to panic thinking about what this person might do with access to my account. They could steal all of my pictures, see my personal information, even send out messages that looked like they came from me. My parents helped me write to Facebook to get the account taken down and I reported the user to the support team but noth-ing worked. The profile I spent two years filling with my favorite memories was out of my control. I had to start all over, but this time around I was not excited to be creating a brand new account.” ~Samantha’s Story (YouTube Live Interviews)

Feel safe with FaceChex.

In addition to physical books, some of the higher tier packages come with the FaceChex online protection software. There are a lot of people out there who will try to steal your content and use it for their own profit. If you don't defend yourself who knows where your content could be used? Defend yourself and your family with FaceChex. At FaceChex we use the latest technology to monitor the global Internet for your images and content. Our technology is backed up by legal firepower to take action. Sleep easy. If someone tries to use your images, we're on it. Fast.
These packages we've poignantly named; Humanitarian, Selfless act, Super Hero Duo, Super Hero, Champion, Protection for All, and Simple Protection.

Technology meets legal firepower.

We created the FaceChex spidering technology and image recognition software, to search for your images online. We are improving the spidering, indexing, and artificial intelligence, by including image and facial recognition. We find matches of your content online, report it to you, let you verify it's yours, and then we see to it being taken down.

Support not only the protection of your teens and those around them, but support a better tomorrow for a future generation by preserving the saftey of our social media and internet of things.

Risks and challenges

The purpose of this book is to decrease the risks of online activity to our children but there are of course risks inherent in publishing.
However, we have chosen a reputable publisher and see little to no risk that they will not deliver our finished product.
