Launching Merely Players and The Shape of Things
A message from Mona Wood-Patterson and Charles Ford:
We are thankful and incredulous that, through your generosity and belief in us, we have already surpassed our published goal. We would love to be able to fund many more shows after this one, and we would be honored if those of you who haven't pledged will continue to kick in some money. We figure this Kickstarter fundraiser is a one-time shot, and it could set us up to become self-sustaining for the future. Thank you beyond belief!
As the theatre directors at Durango High School in Durango, Colorado we were suddenly presented with a buy-out opportunity to retire. After a lot of soul-searching, we grabbed it and are now preparing to launch into the next phase of our lives. Quitting a job when you still love it is both a wonderful and a terrible thing. But, we decided to take the risk – to see what else is out there. Act One was our childhood and education, Act Two was our career at DHS. This is our Act Three.
We would love to continue to make theatre in the Durango area, and we are about to see if Durango is willing to support diverse theatre that is always high quality, sometimes edgy, and often in a found space. So we are back with our theatre company, Merely Players. We believe that we can fill a need here in Durango, where most theatre is youth and family oriented. Not that we have anything against youth or families! But isn’t it about time that we get some contemporary plays here in some different environments? Plays that leave you thinking ---- plays that tap into the emotions --- plays that require accomplished acting, plays that shake it up a bit here in the old Four Corners~
One such play is Neil LaBute’s THE SHAPE OF THINGS. It’s an edgy exploration about how life and art are intertwined, posing the question: Is it okay to create even if it might destroy?
We have a venue – a nifty little space behind a dance studio here in town. We have actors – several DHS alum who are now acting professionally. We have passion, which we have put that to use for years in what has largely been our community service when we worked at DHS and which we now want to redirect into other dynamic theatrical projects.
But, alas, we don’t have money. As anyone who has ever produced theatre will tell you, it’s an expensive art form (especially when Charles Ford is the designer!) We didn’t know we were leaving DHS, and we didn’t have time to write any grants. So, we are asking our friends, former students, and audience members to help us launch this unique and exciting venture. The money we get from this Kickstart will go toward rent for the space, royalties for the play, salaries for the actors, and future endeavors.
Our long-term goals include making more theatre after this play, being able to pay our actors and technicians, continuing with our education outreach and intern programs, and becoming a vital part of the arts scene here in the region.
It’s tricky to know how much money to ask for, because we don’t get any of the donations if the Kickstarter project isn’t fully funded. So, we’re gonna go low here. But, please know that we will happily take any amount, and we guarantee that every dime will go toward making quality theatre. We know that a lot of people in the arts ask for money, and that you have a lot of choices about where to spend your entertainment dollar. And we know that you don’t necessarily have a lot of money. We would be honored by any amount that you can give – seriously, it all adds up! We are a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, so your donation is tax deductible.
So, if you can help us, we would be thrilled. And, if not, please keep us in your thoughts and send us best wishes so that we can make this thing work! Thank you, thank you, thank you from Mona and Charles (a.k.a. WP and Ford)
THE SHAPE OF THINGS plays at 7:00 P.M. July 21, 22, 23, 37, 28, 29, and 30 at The Back Space Theatre, 1120 Main Avenue in Durango.
