HEY! Check out what's going on down here:
As a senior at Syracuse University pursuing my BFA in Fashion Design, I am in the process of designing and producing my senior thesis collection. The Fall 2012 semester was full of long nights spent slaving over designs, fabric swatching, and sketches upon sketches upon sketches, but NOW… it’s 2013, and it’s time to put it into production!
The S.U. senior fashion show will take place on April 25, 2013, and I am creating and will be debuting a six-look collection called D00N.
D00N will consist of garments made out of a variety of materials:
+vinyl coated wire rope for knitting (hundreds of yards)
+a variety of leathers from Tandy Leather Factory
+several yards of other fabrics such as wools, silks, silk chiffons, and more
I will also need to buy all of the lining fabrics, threads, closures (including buttons, zippers, snaps, hook and eyes, etc.), and interfacings.
I will be independently draping and flat-patterning the entire collection, so I will go through several trees worth of paper (that I will recycle, promise!) and countless yards of muslin.
As the designer, I will also be responsible for providing all six of my models with shoes and accessories.
After sourcing, swatching and finalizing all six of my looks, I have estimated that the production - start to finish; paper pattern to real-life runway - of this collection will cost me around two thousand dollars ($$$). I want to make these garments to the best of my ability, and I want to use the best materials I can get my hands on. I truly believe that, without the right fabrics and materials, a great design can become a failure. That is why I have done a ton of research and have my mind set on some innovative textiles to make my designs really happen -- and happen in quality.
I want D00N to be something that I am proud of. I want D00N to be something my family and friends are proud of. This is my final collection as a design student. This is it. This is my chance to show the world what I have learned and who I really am as a designer.
But, I cannot make any of this happen without your help. Please help me make this collection become a reality.
Thank you so much.
PS- A special thanks to Maddie Holloway for filming and editing the video.
Risks and challenges
As a student attending the prestigious Syracuse University entirely on financial aid and scholarships, money has always been a challenge. What they don't tell you upon acceptance to school is that, as an art or design major, you better be prepared to fork out some serious change not only for books, but for art supplies as well. In the fashion designer's case, he/she better be prepared to buy machine parts, needles, pins, seam rippers, spools and spools of thread, trimmings, etc. But, most importantly, that design student should supply her own fabric. For me, the weighty financial responsibility that goes along with producing six complete runway looks is all too much. So, please, in any amount that you can afford, contribute to my senior thesis collection project. Anything and everything will be deeply appreciated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
