What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

The patent pending retractable leash (Rippin Recoil) for surfboards  is almost ready for the manufacturing stage. The funding from our Kickstarter community will advance our project to the fourth and final prototype. This prototype will be engineered to retrofit most surfboards with the ability to custom shape into newly manufactured boards. Once field tested in the surf for durability and functional performance, we will be able to produce an initial product for resale to the global surfing industry.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge that we face is getting to the manufacturing stage with a unit that is lightweight and thin enough to retrofit an existing surfboard as well as be used as an element of a brand new board built into the foam core as a custom feature. Our current patent pending design has been 3d printed and all moving parts are machined stainless steel. We are researching lightweight, durable materials for the final stage.
