Welcome to Red Dragon Gaming's Trenchline Kickstarter! We are offering sets of our trench defence system for wargaming, available painted or unpainted. The scenery is hand made, cast in durable resin, and is ideal for scales from 15mm to 28mm. As wargamers ourselves we want great looking scenery which we can use for a range of the different games we play, and these defences will look just right for many, many different systems. Whether it's historical systems such set around the Napoleonic, WW1 or WW2 periods, or fantasy systems with hordes of malevolent creatures swarming towards you, or a dark science fiction setting with infantry shooting from a dug-in position, these defences will enhance your battlefield both visually and tactically.
First, a bit about ourselves. We are a pair of wargaming enthusiasts from Somerset, UK, with decades of experience playing games, painting models and scratch building terrain and scenery. Just over a year ago we decided to combine our experience and trade as Red Dragon Gaming, offering our own designs of pre-painted resin cast terrain. Over that time we have had a fantastic response to our pre-painted resin cast terrain, and some great online reviews, so we have decided to move up a gear and reach a wider audience through a Kickstarter. As well as getting out popular trench defences out there, it will also help us to develop Red Dragon further and cement the good progress that we have made to date. Investing in this Kickstarter project will help our fledgling wargames terrain business to accelerate its growth and be able to offer more to the wargaming community.
Here are some pictures of some of the pieces in action, showing their size and scale with the use of 15mm and 28mm models:
The trench system is modular, allowing for maximum flexibility. You can choose to place pieces in a line for a classic trench system or defence line, or put a few pieces together in an enclosed formation to make a protective stronghold. The curved entrenchments and the square trench end pieces work particularly well on their own as dug in areas for artillery pieces.
We are offering three different sets of trenchline defences, drawing on the components above (curved trenches, straight trenches, corner pieces and square end pieces). They are available fully painted and flocked to a very high standard, or you can buy the unpainted plain resin pieces for a lower price to finish off yourself. There are four styles of finish - "Grass", "Wasteland", "Desert" and "Snow", which are shown below. If this Kickstarter project is successful and goes ahead, contact us and state which finish you want.
We also sell a range of wargaming terrain on our website (www.reddragongaming.co.uk), most of which is available in these four styles and will match perfectly if you want to expand your terrain collection.
There are three levels of trenchline on offer. The entry level is "The Outpost", made up of two square end pieces and a pair of curved trenches. They can be put together to make a small enclosed defensive area, or used separately as dug-in positions for artillery or small infantry detachments.
The mid-level set is "The Redoubt". It has two square end pieces, two pairs of curved trench, one straight trench pair and two corner sections. It can be used to construct a substantial fortification, or a smattering of smaller defensive points across the battlefield. Some wargames systems allow you to have a defensive line as part of your army, and the Redoubt would fulfil many of the requirements of this element of an army list.
The largest set is the impressive "Battleline". Comprising two square end pieces, two pairs of curved trenches, three pairs of straight trenches and four corner sections, this set gives you plenty of options for your gaming. You can have it winding across the battlefield to dominate the landscape, giving you your own Western Front to defend. Or you can layer the trenches against your enemy, giving several lines of defence in depth. Alternatively, the Battleline can be deployed as several strongpoints across the deployment zones of both armies, leaving a no mans land in between to be fought over. However you choose to use it, you can re-configure it again and again for every battle you fight.
All prices include postage to the UK, overseas orders will incur an extra charge to cover increased shipping costs.
UPDATE: We've had a request for close up photos of the pieces, and for measurements, so here they are:
Curved entrenchment: 6"/15cm wide, 2.5"/6cm deep, internal curve 4"/10cm wide and 1.5"/4cm deep.
Square end piece: externally 4"/10cm wide by 2.5"/6cm deep, internal space 2"/5cm wide by 1"/2cm deep.
Straight trench piece: 8"/20cm wide by 2"/5cm deep.
Corner piece: Outer corner is 5"/13cm by 4"/10cm, inner corner is 2"/5cm by 1"/2.5cm
Risks and challenges
We really want this project to be a success for all involved - we put great customer service at the heart of what we do. Because of that we have put limited quantities on offer to ensure that we can deliver for December 2015 and the Christmas market.
There are very few risks in this project. We are not reliant on any third parties for design, production or finishing the products. We are responsible for creating the moulds, casting the products and getting them produced to a high standard ourselves. We have been making a wide range of resin cast terrain for a year now so we know how long it takes to produce and we have set our reward limits to reflect this. If we find that there is significant demand we will set up a second wave with delivery times in February 2016, and any further waves as necessary. What we don't want to do is promise to deliver by a set time and miss that deadline, so we are being cautiously realistic with the quantities we are initially putting on offer.
But as we have already designed the products and have moulds made, and as there are no third parties to deal with or legal issues to stumble over, we are confident that we will be able to deliver these high quality products within the stated delivery times. We have had significant projects providing bulk orders of terrain for wargaming companies in the past and delivered on time, and we have made space in our forward production schedules so that this Kickstarter will have top priority in the run up to Christmas 2015.
***UPDATE: We have added in a second wave for the Battlelines and the painted Redoubts, with delivery expected by the end of February 2016***
***UPDATE 2: With strong demand for painted Battlelines we have added 15 of these sets into a third wave, with delivery expected by the end of April 2016***Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
