The Lesbian Code is a work-in-progress fictional novel about the lives of five young women in London who are connected to each other through their sexuality. The novel follows their trials and tribulations, sexual exploits and drama as they connect with one another and the world around them finding their own identities and voices. The novel also seeks to explore transgender and race issues and what life is like for gay women in today's world. The book will be around 50,000 words and published in both hardback and paperback. It will be completed by September and it will hopefully be published and distributed within the same month.
I am a 23 year old English Literature graduate who is an active member of the LGBT community and have worked with other members on projects such as It Gets Better. I am a firm believer in freedom of expression and the right to fall in love with whoever we want; something that resonates with us all and for years these notions and desires have been expressed through artistic interpretation such as literature and I would like to add my own voice to this pool of thought.
I am trying to raise funds to cover publishing costs, promotion and publicizing of the book to reach all audiences from both a straight and LGBT youth to an older generation. The funds will go towards publishing the book in hard copy and e-book format with a self publishing service. The funds will also cover the costs of advertising it and hopefully will enable me to do some book signings. With luck I can grab the attention of a major publishing company who will take on the novel. I feel it is important for people in the LGBT community to have something they can relate to so they know that they too can have a voice and are not alone in the world.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge of this project is the research I will undertake for my portrayal of black and transgender characters; I want to depict their experience with respect and accuracy and will endeavor to do this by communication with these communities and by doing my own research.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
