Way back in 2011, myself (Joey Esposito) and Jonathan Moore Kickstarted a four-issue mini-series called FOOTPRINTS, a hardboiled mystery noir comic about Bigfoot as private detective and his team of cryptid pals as they try to solve the murder of one of their own. The book was published to critical acclaim from the comic book press and major outlets like USA Today, who named the book in their "Best of" feature for that year.
We've since gone on to other projects -- I co-write CAPTAIN ULTIMATE from Monkeybrain Comics and have published a graphic novel called PAWN SHOP, while Jonathan has been doing steady illustration work for clients like AEG, NECA/WizKids, American Mensa, and Grosset & Dunlap -- but we've finally reunited to continue the adventures of Foot, Nessy, Jersey Devil, and Choop in a brand new double-feature one-shot comic called FOOTPRINTS: BAD LUCK CHARM. We love these characters dearly, but the only way we can return to tell more stories with them is with your help! That's why we're here.
Bad Luck Charm consists of two different stories that total one 24-page comic book and explore two very important eras in the Footprints timeline -- before the events of Volume 1 and after them.
The first story is the titular "Bad Luck Charm," that finds Devil and Motheresa trying their luck in Las Vegas in the mid-1960s. The second tale is "Ghost on the Road," a post-Volume 1 mystery that finds Foot and the gang investigating the emergence of a new cryptid deep in the swamps of South Carolina -- the Lizard Man!
Fans of Volume 1 might notice one big change... COLOR! We figured if we're sending the gang to Vegas, there was no way we could stay black and white.
We've included all six pages of the "Bad Luck Charm" story here on this Kickstarter page just to show you what all the fuss is about! If you're unfamiliar with Footprints, you can still read Footprints #1 for free here, buy the entire trade paperback on Amazon or Comixology, or just pledge to this Kickstarter to receive a copy alongside Bad Luck Charm!
We're offering some cool rewards in addition to the printed book and usual fare like cameos and original art -- things like the T-shirt you see below, as well as a fully painted art print by Jonathan. We also have lots of cool digital rewards from other comics that we've done, to the Bad Luck Charm script, to an all-new short prose story set in the Footprints universe.
Here are some samples of the kind of sketches you can get from Jonathan at the $100 level:
The money raised from the Kickstarter will go towards production costs for the book and the rewards, including design, lettering, coloring, materials, printing, and shipping.
Unfortunately, due to the extremely high and fluctuating prices of international shipping, we're only able to offer the ANTE UP level of physical rewards to international backers. However, we've created a special $15 digital-only reward tier that includes a ton of digital incentives for our friends overseas or just for those that prefer digital to print.
Risks and challenges
I've run two Kickstarters so far (one for Footprints Vol. 1 and the other for my graphic novel Pawn Shop) and both came with delays beyond my control. While we've taken every precaution we can against that happening, there are always circumstances beyond our control that could always delay production. However, those that have backed my other projects will tell you that despite delays, we followed through on all of our rewards and delivered them to the absolute best of our abilities.
That said, Bad Luck Charm is already about halfway in the can with Jonathan consistently plugging away at the rest. We've given August 2014 as our estimated date, but with a little (good) luck, we just might deliver ahead of schedule!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
