Yes, by popular demand, I'm relaunching the Stolen Child Tarot!
If you're new to the project, you can check out the original campaign page here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/774786282/stolen-child-tarot-a-major-arcana-deck
So what's different this time?
Due to long term unemployment (bad), I'm a kitten's whisker from finishing all the images (good)! I'll be sharing lots of new art as the Kickstarter campaign rolls along...
Also, I've re-researched local print and shipping to nibble the campaign goal down. And I've even found new and improved options for the card jewelry rewards so that it includes full card images and is more durable!
Like before, I'll be providing links to galleries of images for production sketches, original art and jewelry so supporters can see and claim a specific reward! Why, here they are now...
What? You didn't follow the link and you have no idea what I'm talking about? Okay, fine, here's the whole shmoodle (updated!) from the original campaign...
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Hello and thank you for visiting my Kickstarter project!
I’m Monica and I’m a free lance illustrator. If you’re into Tarot cards, you might know my work from the Tarot of the Dead, a Day of the Dead themed tarot deck that I created.
The project I’m working on now is the Stolen Child Tarot. The name and inspiration for this deck came from one of my favorite poems, the Stolen Child, by William Butler Yeats -- in particular the refrain:
“Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.”
To create the atmosphere of the poem, I’m designing the imagery without man-made objects like the usual tools you would see in a traditional deck -- for example, a crown could be represented by antlers, or an animal's form could represent the clothing for a human station. Also, there won’t be any adult figures. The humans in this deck are all changeling children that have embraced different parts of the natural world.
My hope with this campaign is to be able to complete the 22 cards of the major arcana, plus 2 title cards, and produce a limited edition print run of these as a complete entity. My illustrations are done with colored ink and watercolor and have shading and detail that will not reproduce at good quality with online print on demand services--that's where Kickstarter comes in!
Reaching my Kickstarter goal will allow me to finish and produce this project with a local printer utilizing profession 4 color process that will accurately reproduce the color and detail of the originals. Creating this limited edition artist's portfolio of the major arcana will hopefully be the first step to developing a full deck in the future -- and I've included some minor arcana artwork in the video.
To make these artist editions special for supporters of the project, there are two title cards with artwork created only for this project and print edition. Also each deck will be signed and numbered, and one of the title cards includes an area to personalize it to the recipient with a name or small drawing-- you tell me what to include!
All pledge rewards include shipping and all pledge levels will be signed up for behind the scenes updates on the project! (*Except when you need to add a little for international shipping...)
Along with the cards, I am creating a PDF field guide to the deck with thumbnails of each image and interpretations, which will be available for all supporters of the project.
When will the project complete?
All artwork should be complete by the end of March and I anticipate having The Stolen Child into supporters hands by May. Happy Spring!
What is Kickstarter?
If you are new to Kickstarter, Kickstarter is an all or nothing funding platform for creative projects. You can pledge money at different reward levels, or at any amount you choose. If the funding goal is reached, as a supporter, you’ll receive a unique personalized piece of art as a thank you from me. If the funding goal isn’t met, the project ends and no money changes hands.
Say, didn't you have a reward where I could pick an animal totem to put in a card before?
Why yes, and it was a popular reward! In fact, those who selected it will have fun playing their own "Where's Waldo?" with the deck as I decided to honor the totems that were selected from the previous campaign ;-)
Congratulations! You reached your funding goal!! What will the extra pledges be used for?
Good question! My funding goal covers printing, shipping and the Kickstarter/Amazon fees -- just the bare bones to bring this into the world. Since it's already gone over, I'm upgrading the card back and the end paper designs - I'll post images as soon as I can, but they will look awesome! Anything else will go into the special UAF or Unemployed Artist Fund where it will be used for important things like toilet paper, Monica Chow (tm), paying bills, and generally keeping my cats Jilly and Yo Yo in the extravagant house cat lifestyle to which they've become accustomed. So it will go to good use!
You said 'Limited Edition'... How limited? How many editions?
This will be a single print run of 500. I won't reprint until if and when it is expanded into a 78 card deck. Also, the two title cards and the card back design will be exclusive to this edition -- they won't appear again!
What happens to the decks not promised as Kickstarter Rewards?
As a Thank You to Kickstarter supporters, I made the reward price as low as I could. Decks not going out as rewards will go into my online shop for $40 -- still a very low price for a portfolio of 24 art prints!
Thank you again for visiting my project, and a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supports it by pledging and helping spread the word!
