About this project
Welcome to our kickstarter page.
The idea of our campaign is to help fund the recording of our new CD. This is a very exciting artistic endeavour and we need your help to make it happen.
Why kickstarter? The costs of making a recording are very high. They include studio hire, producer, sound engineer and piano hire, all for the recording sessions. Then there are postproduction costs which are editing, artwork, printing CDs and marketing. We need your help to meet these costs.
Why do we need to record? It helps us get heard and reach a wider audience. Our music will be available online at the click of a button. This will result in more concert opportunities in new places and more supporters... like you! We are also recording some music that has never been recorded before, so this will be a historical occasion.
What are you recording? Is there anything new? We are making the premiere recording of a rarely performed trio by Ferdinand Hiller. Alongside this we are recording two masterworks: Beethoven's wonderful Ghost Trio and Schubert's Notturno.
Who was Hiller and did he really take a lock of Beethoven's hair? Ferdinand Hiller (1811-1885) visited Beethoven on his deathbed and took a lock of his hair. This remained in his family until the 20th century when it was sold at Sotheby's. Putting that to one side, Hiller was a fascinating figure in history, an affable and gregarious man who was known and liked by many of the great 19th century composers. He made innumerable friends and had extensive correspondence with all the leading musicians in Europe at the time, with Schumann, Brahms and Mendelssohn in Germany, and with Chopin, Liszt and Berlioz in Paris.
Hiller was a virtuoso pianist, conductor and composer. He was childhood friends with Mendelssohn, who took Hiller's advice on the famous D minor piano trio making the piano part even more virtuosic. Schumann dedicated his piano concerto to Hiller and Chopin, three op.15 Nocturnes. Hiller's music is somewhat neglected today and our recording will be the first of his piano trios.
How can you get involved? There are a list of rewards on our page, from limited-edition CDs, specialist instrumental lessons to private concerts. They are a 'special offer' as they are priced below our usual lesson fees and performance fees. If you think of something else not listed, then please do not hesitate to ask. Many would make an excellent Christmas gift!
What happens if we exceed our goal? If we raise more money, then we have a stretch goal. We would like to make a music video to go with the CD. This would be for our website and to go on YouTube, social media platforms and online forums. Building a good online presence is really important for our ensemble's future as we can reach wider audiences, even to the far corners of the globe!
Thank you for your support so far. Please help spread the word by sharing our page with your friends, by email, facebook, twitter or by word of mouth.
Risks and challenges
The challenges from our project are small as we are three passionate musicians all committed to this recording. The risks are simply to do with the time scale as we have estimated how long it will take to organise every detail, from the recording sessions, post production editing and art work. We will keep our backers updated as everything progresses and plan to get the project completed by spring next year, which is a typical length of time to get a CD made.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
