When I graduated college and moved across the country to Arizona, I identified as a feminist but had no actual idea of how much that self-identity would evolve in my new desert home. As it happened, I moved at a particularly volatile time in human rights issues, and found that almost daily attacks against women (not to mention LGBTQQI people, people of different races, and immigrants), were making my facebook newsfeed. At the time I wasn’t even subscribed to half of the pro-women sources I am now, but the news was still getting through. The more I read, saw, and learned, the more angry, obsessive, and sick about it I became. I joined up with women’s rights groups, most notably Unite Women, donated funds, signed a lot of petitions, and spread the word wherever I could. But I continued to feel powerless.
And that’s when I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of art being made for the movement and that as a photographer I was in an ideal position to start making some.
I wanted to make images that were simple, readable, shareable, and could be held up in protest. I started out with one, then another set, then another. The response online and in person was overwhelmingly positive - there were so many comments, links, shares, messages - the majority of which was unbelievably motivational and touching. I donated the images to Unite Women so that they could use them to inspire people to stand up for their rights, and the rights of their friends and families.
After the images started to get a lot of attention, I began to notice comments and messages from people who wanted to be involved with the project from all over the USA! I got to thinking - this can’t begin and end in Arizona. There are feminists in every state. And they want to be heard.
I want to create a 11x8 softcover photo book that explores feminism across the USA. I want to go from state to state via trains, busses, and planes, taking intimate portraits of feminists in their environments (homes, local hangouts, etc), continuing the nude feminist series, and interviewing the subjects. The book would be organized chronologically, dedicating about two pages per state (one for a photograph, one for details about getting to the shoot, quotes from the interview, and some behind the scenes images). Some pages between shoots would also be dedicated to the journey itself - images of tickets, interesting road-side attractions, excerpts from my personal journal, and so forth. I would leave in late March of 2013, with a predicted return 6 months later in September 2013.
My purpose in pursuing this project is to find out what American feminism looks like, and to create a book that will allow the reader to fully experience the journey with me. I hope that feminists who come into contact with the project, across the country and across the world, would be able to stop feeling entirely alone. For people who do not know what feminism is to learn and discover it. For people to feel connected and empowered with the knowledge that even in a time when it feels as though our country and our politicians are turned against us, we are there. Everywhere. Fighting.
**I don't see myself represented in your video!**
I work very hard to include diversity in my photos, and worked very hard to get it in my video, too! Unfortunately it decided to monsoon the day we filmed, and several key players I was hoping for couldn't make it. During the trip I plan to visit feminists of all ages, colors, creeds, genders, sexual identities, gender identities, and walks of life.
**interested where the money is going?**
I've made this helpful graph!
**a note about the backer rewards**
You may notice that the expected delivery date says consistently "December 2012". This is when you will start receiving any rewards - seeing credits on the website, having access to blogs, getting your bumper stickers, etc. However - the fun doesn't stop there. As the project continues you'll start receiving your other rewards as they become available - for example, I can't send you a postcard from Montana until I get there! All backers should expect to have finished receiving all of their rewards no more than a year after the traveling portion is completed.
**a note about my financial goal**
The goal stated - $44,914 - is the absolute bare-bones minimum for me to get this trip done. My first reach goal would be $50,000 - I'd be able to include more content, maybe increase the size of the book, and get a camera suitable to travel with long-term! My next reach goal would be about $70,000 which would allow me to make the book hard cover OR to include more than one feminist per state! A reach goal of $90,000 would allow a hard cover and 2 feminists per state! And I LOVE the sound of that, don't you??
