About this project
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES...
Durbin the young mouse saved the forest of Verdancia from the vicious rat Krochek the Hunter and his horde of savage rodents. Then he helped Clove find the hidden Elemental's temple where she received the second spell in her quest around the world to become a geomancer. But in the process, the group lost their trusted guide and ally and are stranded in the dangerous Swamp of Wrath. Durbin must now take the lead, knowing only that their next destination is the vast fields of Korel where the legendary rabbits who protect the critters of the land will help them find the third hidden temple.
But when they arrive in Korel it is not the rabbits who are there to greet them, but a giant hawk intent on killing the five forest critters. The group is rescued by a clan of hedge hogs who bring them to their underground village and fill them full of food and drink. While there, they tell them of the curse that has befallen Korel, where the hawks have defeated the rabbits and enslaved every critter of the land.
Together the five companions and their new hedge hog friends devise a plan to face the hawks and free the enslaved critters. But before them lies a mighty task, as they must climb the giant mountain to the peak where sits the palace of Talonridge. And many questions still remain; Where is the hidden temple of the Elementals that contains the third spell? What secrets do the hawks of Talonridge protect? And what has happened to the brave rabbit warriors who once ruled the land?
Talonridge is a 216 page illustrated fantasy adventure. It is aimed primarily for middle-grade boys, but I hope it appeals to readers of all ages who seek a fun action story filled with magic and treasure. The story is about 80,000 words, slightly longer than the first Harry Potter book. Fans of Redwall and Mouse Guard will especially love this series!
Be wary though, any timid readers out there, as the characters live in a world filled with swords and spears and carnivorous beasts. There's no excessive gore, but the story is brutally realistic. However, all that pulse-pounding action is interspersed with fun songs, rich story, and great character development that make Talonridge a unique and magical adventure!
THE SAMPLE PAGES:
I plan on making Magefable a 63 book series, with several spin-off books and many short stories that expand the universe. I'm publishing under my own imprint so that I maintain creative control and can publish a book whenever the series deems necessary, as opposed to when a publisher wants me to.
The series continues to follow Durbin and Clove as well as a slew of friends who come and go. They travel around the world seeking the temples of the Elementals in order to gain the power of the geomancer and ultimately face the lion Sinvicious. As Clove's powers grow, Durbin begins his own quest of tracing the path of his legendary father Marcus the Brigand while hunting for and collecting unique treasures, such as a sack that holds anything, a bow that never misses its target, and a vest that gives the user a second pair of arms. In each book they overcome powerful villains and the harsh and dangerous elements of the world.
I have the first nine books fully fleshed out and titled:
Magefable: Durbin is a young mouse scamp, dreaming of becoming a swashbuckling adventurer like his legendary father. Clove is a young mouse maid on a mission to become a geomancer, a mage with the ability to control the earth, wind, fire, water, and life. Together they set out to save the forest of Verdancia from the horde of rats that are tearing it apart.
Talonridge: The group discovers a valley full of animal slaves, ruled over by giant hawks that live in the mountains just north of the field. With the help of a clan of hedge hogs and an escaped rabbit they attempt to defeat the hawks and free the poor animals.
Korel: The group learns the secrets of the mythical rabbits who once protected the land from the birds of Talonridge (but whom turned against their own kind) and attempt to restore peace in the kindgdom of Korel.
Terrormist: The group seeks out Sinvicious's library, hidden on an unchartable island and guarded by lightning-casting mages, all while trying to avoid the Magellan-like badger who is trying to find them.
Foxtale: The group stumbles upon a marsh ruled by a ruthless fox who lives in a massive temple and is intent on chopping the tails off of every creature around, hoping to draw out the mythical Will O' Wisp, the creature that took his tail.
Bravenwood: The group travels to the forest of Bravenwood where a war is fought between the birds, led by a ferret with a magic bow that never misses its target, and the squirrels, led by a squirrel with an amulet that makes him invincible to arrows.
Dragonsquirrel: Bailey attempts to steal a dragon egg from a mountain where dragons are bred and raised for Sinvicious's army, while the rest of the group attempt to free the mice children held captive as food for the dragons.
Inglerot: While travelling away from the mountains, members of the group disappear during the night, leading Durbin deep into the dark depths of Inglerot where lives the most vicious, savage creature that he's ever had to face.
The Mouse King: The group leads the mice children back to the castle where they were taken from to find the place overrun with an army of stoats. Together they vow to help the mice reclaim their kingdom.
THE BOOKMARKS: Each bookmark is printed on pearl white metallic card stock 107# and comes with a colored tassel, a glass bead, and a glass leaf pendant. There are 5 different designs, 3 from Magefable and 2 from Talonridge.
THE PRINTS: Each art print is printed on pearl white metallic card stock 197# and mounted onto a colored matte frame. They both feature a scene and poem from Magefable and Talonridge.
THE BIRTHDAY PACKAGE: The birthday package comes with a signed copy of both Magefable and Talonridge, all five bookmarks, and both art prints, each carefully hand-wrapped in colored tissue paper then decorated with ribbon and Magefable decor. All of that is placed in a Magefable-themed box with a big green bow! It also includes a special Magefable birthday card signed by me, the author/illustrator of Magefable and Talonridge! It comes in two forms, one with black and white copies and one with color copies!
THE CUSTOM PAGE PRINT: Have your favorite page from either Magefable or Talonridge printed on pearl white metallic card stock 197# then mounted on a black matte frame! If you're not sure which page you want, let me pick one for you (I promise to give you the most artistic and colorful page I can find!)
THE COMMISSIONS: Choose the character or scene of your choice and have a one-of-a-kind 6"x9" print made especially for you! Each one is computer colored and printed on pearl white metallic card stock 197#, then I hand-ink each one and mount it on a black matte frame!
THE SHADOW BOX: Get a 3-D replica of the cover of Talonridge inside of a hand-crafted shadow box! Words can't describe how awesome this is so take a look!
DESIGN A SHORT STORY: Help me design a 20 page short story based off from the world of Magefable! You help create the characters involved and start the plot! I will then finish the story, edit it, illustrate it, design the cover, then have it printed! You will receive 10 copies of the book after it is complete! And when I eventually publish an anthology of the first three books, your story will be included!
The basic themes are:
1) The Origin of Bailey
2) Durbin and Morro's Verdancia Forest Adventure
3) Quellen and Cedoc's Journey up Talonridge
4) Stories From Rothlorn
That's all I have for a guideline! Help finish these stories!
CLASSROOM VISIT: This is the coolest reward of all! I will travel to your classroom (or your child's classroom), anywhere in the US in the Fall of 2013, and will spend the day with them writing and illustrating a story based on Magefable! (up to 20 kids maximum). They will each receive copies of Magefable in advance so that they can read them beforehand, then when I visit their class they will each receive copies of Talonridge, bookmarks, and art prints.
Each student will get a chance to create a character who will be featured in the story. They will name them, choose what animal they will be, and offer up their traits. Then, after the class visit, I will write and illustrate the story, publish it, and send each student a copy of the story, plus an individually made art print of their character, and have it all shipped to them before the end of the school year!
The story will be based on two rats who were left behind from the rest of the rat horde who passed through Verdancia Forest in Magefable. The characters that the students create are going to have to work together to find a way to stop those two rats from causing further harm to the forest! And when I eventually publish an anthology of the first three books, their story will be included!
THE ADD ONS:
Don't see exactly what you want on the pledge? You can add to any of the pledges that you wish, just back the tier you want and add the amount listed below for what you want, then send me a message describing what it is you want to add. WHERE DOES THE MONEY THAT'S RAISED MONEY GO?
Well, about 10% goes Kickstarter and Amazon for allowing us access to this wonderful site. Most of the money goes into the production of the books and rewards as well as the cost of shipping. The rest goes into the cost of ISBNs, proof copies of the book, and extra copies to send to reviewers and to stores (most stores will only accept a self-published book on consignment, meaning that I only receive payment for them when and if a book a sold, meaning the more money I raise, the more copies I can get into more stores!).
THE STRETCH GOALS:
Once we reach the total needed to publish we'll start adding stretch goals!
The music in my video is "Heroic Age" by Kevin Macleod, from the website incompetech.com
Risks and challenges
The book is nearly complete, and with a few final touches it will be ready to go! This leaves the only real risks in the hands of the printers, the most likely of which are delays. I have the date of delivery set for September, giving me two months to work out any issues, and I learned a lot while printing Magefable that will help me expedite the printing process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
