Journey through the depths of an ancient forest filled with twisted trees and arching canopies. Hidden stones crunch underfoot while writhing roots seek to hinder you at every step. High above, densely packed leaves shift and whisper in the wind. Whether you're a small group adventurers in the wild or a mighty general commanding vast legions, trees are not to be taken lightly.

My goal is to create a unique set of 3D printable trees .STL files for tabletop gaming. For being such a staple on wargaming tables and in tabletop role playing games, trees are some of the most complex and tricky pieces of terrain to model. You've either got to spend fortune on pre-made plastic trees or make due with fragile DIY creations.

Personally I've tried clay, wire armatures, paper mache and more, each with varying levels of success. I wanted something I could quickly print, paint and get on the table without having to worry about clump foliage falling off or sticky messes all over my crafting station. Simply put, I identified a problem and needed a solution. And that, my fellow tabletop enthusiasts, is how the idea was born.

All trees were modeled with 3D printing in mind from the get go.
All trees were modeled with 3D printing in mind from the get go.

Having both purchased and DIY'd a wide variety of trees, I knew what worked and what didn't when it comes to the tabletop. Each 3D printed tree in the set follows a few basic rules making them an ideal addition to any wargaming table.

Every bare tree prints as a single piece for enhanced strength and minimal weak points. We tested printing separate branches, adjusting supports and even printing the trees in half. In the end, we found a single, complete print of the bare tree had easier to remove supports, was instantly usable on the tabletop and resulted in zero seams to cover before painting. Plus, each set of leaves has a built in glue point for hassle free gluing.

The base set comes with 10 distinct leaf bunches for maximum configurations.

We specifically chose to have the leaves print separate from the base trunk to allow for near unlimited combinations and configurations. While two trees might have the same trunk, swapping out the leaves and slightly rotating them will give the overall tree a completely different look.

Mushrooms, roots, rocks, individual leaves and more adorn each hand sculpted tree. As an added bonus, these were printed with an FDM printer and still retain great details.

Highly detailed models were of course, one of the primary areas we focused on with our designs. From the extremely detailed scenic bases and custom made leaf bunches, to the unique tree trunks and twisting branches, we spent a lot of time getting the look just right. Our goal was to have these trees look just as good at eye level for tabletop RPGs as they do when you're three feet away during a massive battle.

The bases are designed to be 2" wide and are a perfect fit for existing fantasy wargaming forests and grid maps. Additionally, the stylized leaves can be assembled fairly flat on the trees allowing for multi level RPG play where minis can easily move from tree to tree without worrying about them slipping off.

Never worry about fragile trees again
Never worry about fragile trees again

This was one of the trickiest areas that needed to be addressed. If we made the branches  and leaves too thick, we'd loose a lot of detail and more filament would be needed during printing. On the flip side if we made them too thin they'd be easily broken and would require too much babying on the tabletop. In the end, after countless tests, we compromised and found a size and thickness that was both acceptably robust and highly detailed.

Honestly, this is our first Kickstarter and we wanted to keep the pledges fairly simple and straightforward. This makes it easier for me to manage and for you to know what you're getting. As such, there are only three available levels to choose from, all of which come with at least one .STL file.

For only $1 you can support and follow along with the "Primeval Forest" project. In addition to supporting us, you'll get access to one of our hand sculpted tree stump .STL files. You can use this as a test print at home to verify the quality of the 3D designs or print a ton of them for spooky swamp or forest scatter terrain. This pledge does not include any stretch goals

This is where the heart of the project lies. With the mature oak pledge, you'll get access to the core set of 3D printable trees allowing you to make an entire forest with the click of a button. This includes three unique bare tree .STL files and ten unique leaf bunch .STL files, for a wide variety of leafy goodness. In addition, you'll also receive the same tree stump .STL file as the young sapling pledge. This pledge does not include any stretch goals.

If you want it all, look no further. The Forest Grove pledge will give you access to every file included in this Kickstarter. No add-on's, no extra fees, no headache. In addition to the three bare trees, ten leaf bunches and tree stump .STL files, you'll also receive an extra two unique tree stumps to add substantial diversity to your gaming table. After all, what forest is complete with only a few trees?

However, the real magic of this pledge comes in the stretch goals. Whether you're interested in different leaf styles, additional unique 3D printed tree configurations or even pre-designed slotted scenic bases for multiple trees at once, you'll have the opportunity to get it all. For experienced dungeon masters who want to step up their game or a tabletop wargamer looking to take their terrain to the next level, this is the ultimate 3D printed tree collection.

As the overall design of the 3d printed trees progressed, new ideas kept coming up that we really wanted to implement. However, in an effort to stay focused, they were saved for later. We figured it was better to get the core set completed, then move onto the cool additions. These ideas have now turned into various stretch goals that, with your help, will add new designs, bases, details and more to the core set. As they are unlocked, the additions will allow for more variability and practicality on the battlefield.

While the included 10 leaf bunches in the core set have a ton of variation and look stunning on the tabletop, a second set of leaves will further enhance the overall look of your forest. This is particularly useful if you plan on printing multiple sets and want to avoid the same leaf patterns, giving your trees a new, unique look from every angle.

I've gone all out with extra details on the stretch goal trees!
I've gone all out with extra details on the stretch goal trees!

Why stop at just three trees? This stretch goal will add three new tree designs resulting in a plethora of options so you can swap and move trees to your hearts content. No longer will you have to worry about your battlefield looking dull and repetitive. These trees will be perfect for fleshing out dangerous forest encounters or for spicing up your miniature wargaming forests.

This is one we really debated whether or not we should include. After all, basing your terrain is a ton of fun and provides a way to show of your DIY craft skills. However, in the end, we figured some folks simply wanted to print, paint and play, without having to dig into their sand bucket and get out their hot glue gun.

This stretch goal includes two slotted scenic base .STL files which will allow you to field both two and three trees together as area terrain on the battlefield. These bases are perfect for both large scale and skirmish tabletop miniatures games where scatter terrain doesn't have quite as much impact as area terrain.

As our name (The Exotic Greeble) suggests, we love greebles and doodads. And by that, we mean cool little add-on that can be glued to existing pieces to spruce them up. In this set specifically, we've got 10 new .STL files that can be printed and added to any of our trees and bases. These include spooky lanterns, abandoned sign posts, grave stones and more. You can think of them as a virtual bitz box. As with all of our other models, they will be finely detailed and print ready.

Once this stretch goal is unlocked I'll develop a small set of modular tree platforms that will be mountable on the existing tree designs.  This will enable aerial combat, easier placement of miniatures in the trees and give your forest a bit of extra pzazz for situations that warrant it. As with the other designs it will be robust, yet detailed for the perfect tabletop accessory.

I figured I'd throw this one in there as forest alters are something commonly found in nearly all settings. Whether for use as scatter terrain on a large scale battlefield or simply as a focal point for an intense RPG session, this forest alter will breath a bit of life into your setup. It will be mounted on a similar 2" base for easy interchangeability with the previously unlocked scenic bases.

Not all trees in the forest still stand at the height of their glory. This stretch goal will unlock a hand sculpted fallen tree to further enhance your tabletop. It will be finely detailed with ground cover, bark, greebles and a host of other elements to truly make it a centerpiece for any gaming session. Lets just hope there aren't any baddies hiding underneath it....

As this has been requested a few times, I've decided to add a set of 2 saplings to the stretch goals. These will be small trees mounted on the same 2" base for easy interchangability. They will have shorter and thinner branches, a smaller root structure and a few new greebles to really bring them to life. They will also still work with the existing leaf bunches. These also include built in supports for easy printing.

For those avid grid based RPG players, I'll be developing two new square scenic bases. One will be 2"x2" and the other other will be 3"x3". Both will have a single circular slot similar to the original scenic bases so you can easily use them with the existing elements in this campaign.

Risks and challenges

There are very few risks or challenges associated with this project. All of the 3D models have already been completed and test printed on my Creality CR-10S. They have further been tweaked for minimal issues on other printers. The only small risk is that your own printer may need to be adjusted to successfully print the files with maximum detail.

Additionally, as this Kickstarter is for DIGITAL .STL FILES ONLY there will be no shipping hassles and delivery of the files will be near instantaneous.
