UPDATE JULY 24: STRETCH GOAL FUNDING
REVERIES reached its campaign funding in just 6 days! I am humbled by your support and kind messages I have received all week. My deepest gratitude to all those who contributed to making this project closer to a reality.
Now that we had secured the first funding goal, I am now aiming to stretch the goal to $7,000. Before the campaign began, I was a bit pessimistic and intimidated by the "all or nothing" policy of Kickstarter. The great turn around this week has given me some confidence and now some desire to spread the word about the work out to even more people.
Stretch Goal 1 $7000: The funding from this stretch goal will allow me to fully fund the production of my book as well as recover some of the material costs used to draft and perfect the images in the book (endless amounts of photographic paper, darkroom chemicals, and lunch money :) ). This financial freedom will allow me to work freely without the worry of running out of funds to buy extra paper to get the print just right. As a token of my appreciation, if we reach this goal, I will put an extra Postcard (image from the Reverie project to be chosen by me) and a hand written thank you note to every book and poster order.
Stretch Goal 2 (TBD): If we reach the first Stretch Goal, I would like to throw a Release party in NYC. Further details to be announced
In March 2018, I traveled to my ancestral city of Guangzhou, China to explore its current state. It’s been a quarter century since the last visit to my parent's hometown, and I anticipated massive changes due to the recent influx of wealth from Mainland China. While walking through Guangzhou and shooting the project, I quickly noticed the new developments and urbanization. But what surprised me the most were the conversations I had with locals; many of which talked about the future with hope, optimism, and pride, but merely referenced them as distant dreams.
In my first book titled “Reveries,” the photographs captured offers a gateway through the subconscious—a journey through a sequence of ‘daydreams’ experienced through the eyes of someone who is in reflection of the past while contemplating the future. This is my perception of the current state of the Guangzhou people and the ironic nature of yearning a dream that already seems to be a reality.
All photographs are shot on 35mm film cameras (Leica and Nikon) and prints are hand- produced by me in my darkroom in New York. The exquisite qualities of black and white analog photography perfectly capture the emotional essence of the photographs.
When I decided to self publish my first book, I knew that craftsmanship was one of my top priorities. To achieve this, I enlisted the help and expertise of the fine ladies of Small Editions, located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Sharing the same ethos, we agreed to create a handmade book that was not pretentious in design, focusing on quality materials, using great paper, while keeping everything at a reasonable price. The result will hopefully be a work that’ll remain in your book collection for the rest of your life.

To support an independent production by an artist who is passionate about what he does, and believes in creating something beautiful and personal without the need for major third-party sources.
The goal of making the book was never about turning profits. In fact, the campaign goal of $4,000 only partially covers the total cost to produce the book, but will be critical to bringing this project to life. Since this is my first Kickstarter Campaign, and due to their "all or nothing" policy, I am aiming for a smaller pledge goal to ensure that I can reach the figure. The rest would be out of pocket cost, but if we can exceed the goal, it would be greatly appreciated!
Being a native New Yorker, it’s easy to get blinded by profit and succumbing to mass production. To me, nothing with value is mass produced by a machine. I believe in work that is beautiful, made with the utmost care by a human being, while supporting other local businesses as well. I chose to work locally with a printer and binder who cares about the final product. Staying true to these values all my prints (Screen Prints and Silver Gelatin) are hand made in New York in limited edition runs to ensure quality and appreciation of value.

To potential supporters, Kickstarter is all or nothing! If I don’t reach my goal, I'll have to find other ways of raising the money. But with your help, I can take a huge step forward in my career! Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
David Zheng was born in 1985 in the Lower East Side of New York City. Growing up in the city, he was constantly stimulated by the diversity and ambiance, which shaped his curiosity in people and culture. Commuting to midtown Manhattan while formerly working at a Stock Brokerage firm, David learned to observe and was drawn to the shapes, sounds, and daily nuances of the Metropolis. After 8 years working in the Stock brokerage industry, David decided to leave his career to pursue a life in photography 2015.
Being largely self taught and with no former experience, David furthered his education by attending the International Center of Photography in New York to train under a Darkroom Master Printer. He also became an assistant to fine art photographer Renato D’Agostin.
Risks and challenges
The project has already been completely shot in the March 2018. Final prints for scanning will be made within the months of July and August. And now I need your help to begin the printing and binding production of the book. The campaign goal is $4000, which only partially covers the cost of production. The rest will be covered out of my own pocket. If we can raise more than $4000, that would help me tremendously.
After the Kickstarter is over in mid August, I will use the funds generated to begin the production of the book, which I am told would take between 5-8 weeks to be completed (Around early October 2018). After which I am setting a expected delivery date of November 2018, just to get my logistics right. If you're in New York City, you are more than welcome to come to the studio to pick it up.
Although this is my first book and Kickstarter, I am confident in satisfying my orders since I have the guidance from industry experts as well as friends who have successfully fullfilled their own Kickstarter campaigns.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
