Hi, everyone! I've just heard about Kickstarter, and I hope it can help me to make a great sounding record with your help!

So, here it is...

I've been writing, singing and performing my own songs for over 20 years now. All the while, the same question was asked of me, year after year:

"When the hell are you going to make a record of your own, Al?"

Well, after many false starts, dead ends, and not-quite-happy endings, I think I've finally found the way to answer that question, and to make my dream a reality.

One night, not too long ago, after spending weeks in digital editing hell trying to polish a turd of a recording into a diamond, I sat down on my living room couch to contemplate just what on earth I was going to do to make a finished record. The songs I had been working on up until that night sounded nice enough in reality, but there was something missing; there was just no real heart or depth of character coming through on the recordings! And, they just didn't sound "tight" or "in the pocket" to me, the way a professional recording should sound. Frankly, listening to those tracks day in and day out, I was becoming depressed. And, I can tell you that trying to edit the songs digitally for weeks on end was getting me nowhere fast. The quality was getting worse and worse the more I tried to "fix" the songs.

Then, at rock bottom, as desperation hit, I decided to contact a studio I'd heard about from some friends. The place was called "Dirt Floor Studio", located in Chester, CT. I'd heard really great things about the owner, Eric Lichter, and about the great vintage gear he uses in his mostly analog studio. The studio had even been featured on NPR.

Until this time, I had been relying on computers (all digital equipment) when attempting to record the songs, so I was a little tentative to call Dirt Floor. I mean, once you record analog, that's it...typically there's no fixing anything, only doing it over...Despite my concerns I might have had, I sucked it up, called Eric, and we scheduled a date to record. Since I had hit bottom, I had nothing to lose. So, I figured, what's the worst that can happen if I take a chance?

The day of the recording, I showed up at 10am, not knowing what to expect or how the day would unfold. I came in to the studio, and literally within 20 minutes, I was in front of the microphone doing my thing. Eric watched and listened, jumping around to various instruments, engineering the session all the while!  Long story short, by 6pm that night I had a finished song--and, one of the best sounding recordings of the song I'd ever heard. To say that the experience blew me away, and that the results were more than I could have imagined or hoped for, would be an understatement. It was one of the most amazing experiences I've had in a recording studio to watch one of my songs come to life in a way that I couldn't have made happen on my own. My hope was now restored!!

Since that session just weeks ago, we've had tons of interest in the song, and we've even gotten airplay on two local radio stations. Hundreds have already downloaded the song online in it's unfinished state. But, the question still remains:

"When the hell are you going to make a record of your own, Al?"

Well, the answer is...Now.

So, without any further ado, here's my plan:

1.) Raise enough funds through Kickstarter to record, mix, master and reproduce copies of at the least an EP of original songs...or at best, a full length record. Bottom line, 5-10 songs, depending on what comes our way. Funds may also be used to pay guest musicians to play on the recordings if we can.

2.) Schedule sessions with Dirt Floor over a short period of time, between now and the end of November.

3.) Hopefully wrap it up in time for a Holiday release. A great Christmas present for everyone involved!

4.) After the release, we're going to pursue opportunities for larger venue and higher profile performances as well as worldwide airplay and placement of the songs in tv and movies. Hey...why not, right??

I'm so excited to make this project come to fruition after so many years of good ideas just waiting to happen. Despite some reservations about Kickstarter at first, I've come to think about the idea of fundraising this way like this; Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and all the greats I grew up admiring surely didn't fund their records, some of the greatest creative musical statements of all time, by themselves, did they??

Thanks for checking out my project, and please know that your contribution is appreciated so very much!

-Al
