2018 marks the 75th Anniversary of Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved musical "Oklahoma!" It is an honor for The Prizery to present one of the most beloved musicals of all time. From great hits like "O What a Beautiful Morning" and "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," to the classic, "Oklahoma," this Pulitzer Prize wining musical ran for 2,212 performances in its original run that began in March of 1943. The film adaptation in 1955 starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. The show has seen multiple revivals over the years with the most recent Broadway revival in 2002. The musical film of "Oklahoma!" in 2002 featured the entire 1998 London revival cast at the Royal National Theatre starring Hugh Jackman.
The musical is based on Green Grow the Lilacs, a play by Lynn Riggs set in Claremore, Oklahoma telling the story of Curly and Laurey. It is one of the first american musicals that incorporated song and dance as integral components of the story telling. Agnes de Mille choreographed the original Broadway production giving life to the production by adding a ballet that began known as the "dream ballet."
Brooks Atkinson wrote in The New York Times that the show's opening number, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" changed the history of musical theater: “After a verse like that, sung to a buoyant melody, the banalities of the old musical stage became intolerable." The show's creativity stimulated Rodgers and Hammerstein's contemporaries and ushered in the "Golden Age" of American musical theatre.
