Ultimate Christian Wrestling documents the experience of three members of a traveling pro-wrestling Christian ministry based in the Southeastern United States and their attempts to balance faith with the overwhelming amount of problems and insecurities that modern living throws at them. What starts off as an observation on unusual religious practices, turns into a detailed portrait of the human struggle to find acceptance, love, and a means to a better life. Heart-wrenching and hilarious, Ultimate Christian Wrestling puts the media’s love affair with religious controversy aside to explore the nature of faith, how we make sense of the world around us, and the unanticipated disappointment that often accompanies dreams being realized.
Why This Film Matters:
We have seen in the past decade a resurgence of evangelical and conservative Christianity, a resurgence that poses a threat to women, to homosexuals, to those practicing other forms of religion in this country, and to the underrepresented group of Americans who choose to not believe in a higher power at all.
These are the two positions portrayed most in our media and culture. But there is a third, more moderate position worthy of inspection, and what better way to illustrate this position than through the lives of the wrestlers who make up ULTIMATE CHRISTIAN WRESTLING?
ULTIMATE CHRISTIAN WRESTLING is the story of a group of men from the south who fell in love with wrestling and then fell in love with Jesus Christ. Working full time as wrestlers on the pro circuits of Alabama, Georgia, Texas and nationally, these guys gave their all against names sometimes as big as the Iron Sheik. But the lifestyle of sex, drugs, and booze notorious in what they refer to as “secular” wrestling landed more than one of them on a cold hospital table fighting for their lives.
One by one, they reluctantly left, many of them having turned to religion after near-death experiences. Some of them lost themselves in a sea of pills and needles. But eventually, they all found their way to a man named ROB ADONIS, founder of UCW. And it was here at UCW that many of them began their personal relationships with Christ.
UCW represents everything the wrestlers love about their sport, free from dangers, in a healthy, family-friendly environment. Wrestling, the most popular sport in the south, appeals to today’s youth, and the personal testimonies written into each show bring many adults ringside. Some attend the matches because they don’t identify with organized religion. Some view the event as an entertaining church service. Some come solely for the wrestling. But for whatever reason they show up at 7pm on Saturday night, all are welcome, free of charge.
UCW is a world that they enter to forget for a moment what life is really like.
Meet the Main Characters:
How the Funds will be Used:
Ultimate Christian Wrestling is truly a passion project. Even though the film had a successful festival run, it's not quiet complete yet. We need funds to:
- Do a final sound-mix.
- Compose original music.
- And hopefully have an overdue private screening for the wresters in Georgia.
How Kickstarter Works:
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. In other words, if we don’t raise our goal of $11,000, we lose everything. Once we have met our goal, we will contact you to get your address, so we can get these awesome rewards to you.
