About

Orchard is a quick solitaire 'tile laying' game that plays in under 10 minutes. The aim of the game is to harvest fruit (score points) by playing cards so that their fruit trees overlap other trees already in the orchard that bear the same fruit. The more trees you can overlap, the more fruit you'll pick.

In addition to the 15 dice representing your increasing harvest, there are 2 tokens representing 'rotten' fruit. These allow you to lay a card that you wouldn't otherwise be able to - but come with a points forfeit. So you must decide if and when to play them.

Shuffle and divide the 18 cards into two 9 card decks, picking one and setting the other aside to play again later. Draw the top card and place it face up to form the start of your Orchard. Draw two cards into your hand.

Each turn you'll play a card from your hand to add to the Orchard, rotating it 90 or 180 degrees either way, overlapping one or more of the cards already in play.

You'll then place a die showing a '1' on each tree of your played card that overlaps a matching tree underneath it. If there is already a die underneath you'll rotate the die to increase the amount of fruit harvested ('1' to a '3', '3' to a '6', and, with custom dice, ‘6’ to a ’10’).

You're allowed to overlap non-matching trees twice per game by placing a Rotten Fruit cube on them. But doing so will lose you 3 points and you'll no longer be able to place new trees on top of that unfortunate tree.

You'll then draw another card bringing your hand back to two. Once 9 cards are on the board you'll tally up your score and determine how fruitful your harvest was. Was it Pal-tree, Forget-apple, or did you do Pretty Pear-fect (take a bough!)?

Mark is a graphic designer by day and a game designer by night. In addition to Orchard he's also published a bunch of print & play games. He loves challenging his creativity within the constraints of design contests and several of his games have been BoardGameGeek contest winners. He's recently moved to the south coast of England and is looking forward to the sea air, walks along the beach and sampling the local ales. Mark's favorite fruit is nectarine.

Dustin has been playing board & card games since he was beating his family at Pitch back in junior high. He's a highly trained Microsoft Office Engineer. He was also able to trick his wife, Christa, into marrying him and their 3 kids are too cute for their own good. Dustin's favorite fruit is hard apple cider.

In the daytime Michael is a Software developer but at night he’s a gamer. He first started playing video games when his parents got him his very own NES for Christmas, and the rest was history. Some of his best memories as a kid was playing Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. The thing Michael looks at the most in a game is a theme that’s rich and well integrated into the mechanics. When he’s not gaming, Michael enjoys spending time at his home in the mountains, as well as kayaking and hiking with his family. Mike's favorite fruit is blueberries.

Alan is a software engineer during his day job, that translates into a fascination with game mechanics and the algorithms that power his favorite board games. He has been a life long video gamer and fell in love with the board game renaissance 10 years ago. He enjoys many different board game genres, and a good mechanic above all is his focus. Alan's favorite fruit is pineapple.

Brett wasn't born loving board games like the rest of these nerds, but came to realize an affinity at a much older and saltier age. His appreciation for board games was born from a long history of video gaming. He may not be able to tell you the difference between an area-impulse euro and a modular board deck builder, but he brings a unique, somewhat outsider perspective to Side Room Games. Brett's favorite fruit is piña colada.

Risks and challenges

This is our third published game and we have worked extremely hard to prepare ourselves for the task. We’ve learned a ton of lessons on our previous Kickstarter campaigns, Black Sonata and Maquis, and we're even more prepared for Orchard. While we can’t guarantee problems won’t come up, we are confident we have done what we can to ensure things run smoothly. When it comes to the game itself, it’s ready to go! We're working to finalize all of the art and graphic design and we’ll be ready to send the files to the manufacturer shortly after the campaign funds. The game is small and has simple components, so we don’t expect any issues with the manufacturing and shipping process.

Throughout the process we will be sure to inform all of our backers on how things are going and if any issues arise.
