Engage the Nazi occupation of France in la petite guerre to throw off the yoke of the oppressors and free your homeland!
Maquis is a solitaire worker-placement game with variable goals and a play time of approximately twenty minutes. The player places his resistance agents on spaces around town to achieve his goals - blowing up trains, publishing underground newspapers - but at the same time Milice collaborators and Wehrmacht soldiers patrol the area. Agents who can't make it back to the safe house at the end of the day are arrested, and never seen again.
To begin, the player will set up the board, organize the game tokens and randomly choose two mission cards that must be completed in the allotted number of turns.
The player will then shuffle the patrol deck and place it next to the side of the board. This deck represents where the Milice patrols will occur during each day.
The player will choose a location to send their first worker and assign one of their pawns there. They then draw a patrol card, and place a Milice pawn if able. This continues until all of the available worker pawns and Milice pawns are placed. If the Milice find your worker during patrol, they will be arrested!
Your diligent workers are then free to perform their duties, working toward your two goals. Gather resources, recruit fellow patriots to the cause, and undermine the enemy plans to throw off the yoke of oppression and free your homeland!

Jake has been playing board games and taking things apart to find out how they work as long as he remembers, so it was only a matter of time before one happened to the other. Board games design is enough like his software engineering day job to be fun, but different enough to still be fun, so it consumes a lot of his free time - amongst actual gaming (mostly euros with a recent interest in 18XX and the odd dungeon crawl and FATE RPG on the side), woodworking, drawing, learning Italian, and getting poked in the face by his nine-month-old son.
Dustin has been playing board & card games since he was beating his family at Pitch back in junior high. He's a highly trained Microsoft Office Engineer. He was also able to trick his wife, Christa, into marrying him and their 3 kids are too cute for their own good.
In the daytime Michael is a Software developer but at night he’s a gamer. He first started playing video games when his parents got him his very own NES for Christmas, and the rest was history. Some of his best memories as a kid was playing Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. The thing Michael looks at the most in a game is a theme that’s rich and well integrated into the mechanics. When he’s not gaming, Michael enjoys spending time at his home in the mountains, as well as kayaking and hiking with his family.
Alan is a software engineer during his day job, that translates into a fascination with game mechanics and the algorithms that power his favorite board games. He has been a life long video gamer and fell in love with the board game renaissance 10 years ago. He enjoys many different board game genres, and a good mechanic above all is his focus.
Brett wasn't born loving board games like the rest of these nerds, but came to realize an affinity at a much older and saltier age. His appreciation for boardgames was born from a long history of video gaming. He may not be able to tell you the difference between an area-impulse euro and a modular board deck builder, but he brings a unique, somewhat outsider perspective to Side Room Games.
Risks and challenges
This is our second published game and we have worked extremely hard to prepare ourselves for the task. We’ve learned a ton of lessons on our previous Kickstarter campaign, Black Sonata, and we're even more prepared for Maquis. While we can’t guarantee problems won’t come up, we are confident we have done what we can to ensure things run smoothly. When it comes to the game itself, it’s ready to go! We're working to finalize all of the art and graphic design and we’ll be ready to send the files to the manufacturer shortly after the campaign funds. The game is small and has simple components, so we don’t expect any issues with the manufacturing and shipping process.
