When magic is everything: powers your technology, heals your sick, keeps lamps burning and cities held high, one man has a surprising lack of talent. Magic can’t seem to touch Jasper, an anomaly that could be as useful as it is dangerous. And for Micah, a powerful young magician, he turns out to be so much more interesting than that.
Even with Jasper’s cheerful pragmatism and Micah’s genius for mashing chemicals together; can they really make a dent in a place where another world is just a doorway away? Step into a city of overcomplicated gadgets, runaway spells and a fashion for extravagant magical hats that's getting badly out of control.
These two might be our dashing and romantic leads but they’re just two of a cast who keep expanding, all their stories eager to be told! The world of The Foldings is ever-unfolding, and we’re determined to take in everyone we meet along the way. We hope you’ll love all we have in store.
So what is this kickstarter for?
We want your help to print a 21-page full-colour comic and 10-page illustrated short story to help us bring Foldings out of the digital realm. These stories were chosen to stand alone and give new readers and fans an easy starting point.
An evening stroll around the Polskie Markets turns into a nightmare moment as the city's magic is unable to protect Jasper, the one man the world’s greatest magician cannot live without.
The Short Story:
Meet two new characters: Orla, an extravagant and overly creative alchemist, and Piori, a dangerous engineer with a small army of devious and reckless pirate children at her back. Micah asks Orla to help redesign an airship, and Orla prevails on Piori to help. Can they use a volatile and dangerous new powder to prevent mid-air explosions? Will Piori fend off Orla’s advances long enough for them to try?
If you want to read more, please check out the ongoing prequel, set 10 years earlier when Micah and Jasper first meet! There are also a half dozen shorter comics already up online ([one][two] [three] [four]) and a ton of art and character designs up on The Foldings tumblr.
We love this project, building worlds, gadgets and an ever ballooning cast of every style and hue of human and non-human we can imagine. You can look forward to a cornucopia of stories ranging from romance to adventure, comedy to tragedy, a little mystery and a whole lot of jokes.
Our initial funding goal is just enough money to do a print run! If we meet our stretch goals, it'll all be going into funding more of this: more stories, more comics, more art, more writing. We have so many tales to tell and all of them need to be polished and dressed in their best to be ready for the big wide world.
New! Mini Stretch Goal: £2700
As a little thank you from us to you, should we hit £2700 every physical tier £5 and above will get badges! 1 badge for Avid Adventurers, 2 for Frequent Flyers and above, a full set of 4 badges for Citizens of Sky City and above! You don't have to do anything else extra to get them, they'll be automatically added into every parcel <3
As you can tell from the rather low initial goal, all we're looking for is money to help us further the project, the initial goal will purely cover print costs and any extra made will go straight into the stretch goals or making more content.
A bit more about us: we live 2000+ miles apart, we’ve never met, and we've barely skipped a day of talking or thinking about this project since we first spoke. All this abstraction led us to speculating on the nature of distance, the inspiration of absence, and how fiction interprets reality. Foldings revolves around the effects of closing distances, incarnate muses, and how a lack can redefine a world. We wanted a world with a depth of magic we’d never read before, so deep and integrated that it causes far more problems than it solves. Also a whole lot of ridiculous magical gadgets and flirty jokes.
We hope you'll consider supporting us!
Risks and challenges
We've run similar projects before, shipping out fanbooks and one previous kickstarter (The Story of Sir Boast A Lot!), so we're familiar with most of the possible pitfalls, and we're confident we'll be able to get this comic to you in its current form by April of 2016.
Possible pitfalls include slow printers (the people who print the wooden charms are particularly guilty), Doodles having to take on extra work to support herself while we get this made, and maybe a terrible accident or the computer falling down a well or something.
If the printer is slow we'll let you know, if Doodles slows down due to rent we'll keep you posted, and should the computer fall down a well we will start over. Regardless, this is absolutely getting made!
And of course if we meet our stretch goals (fingers crossed!) that will push the delivery date out a little longer to give us time to work on and polish up the extra content!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
