About

Lviv Geriatric House is a Soviet-style place for co-ageing. People have ended up there for a variety of reasons; they’ve been through different life journeys, but now, when they have got old, they have something in common – they are unwanted and invisible for society.

We believe that art can make a difference, especially through local projects, which provoke discussions, reflections and actions. Our project is more than a social and theatrical one. We chose a cross-disciplinary integrated approach to immerse ourselves into such a complicated issue. The team includes activists and professionals, people of different opinions, mindsets and occupations: a stage director, a choreographer, an art-therapist, a photographer, a composer, a sociologist-analyst and performers.

For a year now, we have been actively communicating with residents of a geriatric house, collecting their life stories, retrospections and reflections. Looking them into the eyes, we were looking into the eyes of our fears. It has been a dramatic experience and we have no right to leave it exclusively for ourselves. We are working on a performance to make the issue visible for the society and are studying the phenomenon to break the loop of suffering.

Beyond social tasks, we have challenged ourselves with a number of quite difficult artistic tasks – the performance is being created at the intersection of audio design, performatory practices, media art, puppet and documentary theatre.

Audio design: an attempt to recall a person’s life. Similar to recalling one’s dreams. Using Surround Sound, we intend to work with the atmosphere of amorphousness, in which the fragments of our memories wander.

Authentic movement: during the rehearsals, the performers have sessions of art-therapy, meditation and yoga-nidra. These practices help them to immerse in the depth of their essence.

Documentary theatre: since Day One of visiting the geriatric home, we have recorded over 300 hours of interviews with its residents. These records are used for creating dramaturgy for the performance, which will sound with authentic voices of the geriatric home’s residents.

Puppet theatre: we successfully crowd-funded for the creation of realistic puppets. Prototypes of these puppets live in the geriatric home. Each puppet has its autonomous built-in audio-system which reproduces the records of old people’s voices. The voices will sound in places where they could never be heard before – in theatre during the show, in public places during street shows, which we intend to hold as additional project promotion.

Media art: art-therapy sessions have become one of the ways of exploring for us. We regularly conduct these sessions for the residents of the geriatric house. During these sessions, people create paintings which express something that they cannot express with words. We think that these works should become an object of art, because they contain important information for humanity. Therefore, we have decided to animate the paintings of the old people and re-create them as 3D scenography.

Now we are deep in the creative process. We have an amazing team and we believe in what we do. We hope that you’ll believe as well.

We still need funds to create high-quality sound and media design, pay fees to the involved performers, buy technical equipment and continue research on the senility phenomenon and the influence of art-therapy in a geriatric house.

We have started with helping old abandoned people to feel less lonely. Now we continue visiting geriatric house, but our impact became more comprehensive. We are giving these old people the feeling of belonging, we are giving the society the new important topic to think of, we are giving ourselves the reasons for happiness.

Over the last two months, we have been conducting art-therapy sessions for residents of the geriatric house as a response to their trust and shared life experience. After art-therapy, they felt better, their mood improved, they switched to positive aspects of reality, instead of focusing on pain, grievance and anger. Having observed these improvements, we decided to study the influence of regular art-therapy in a geriatric house. For example, sound-therapy presupposes listening to music and healing sounds in corridors, dining hall and personal rooms at a certain time. Our hypothesis is that art-therapy would change the atmosphere in a geriatric house and thus would help its residents feel more comfortable.

Once when we had an art-therapy session in the geriatric house, granny Anna met with adversity – she boggled at her door lock and couldn’t get out of her room. But her determination and desire to get to the session were so strong that she convinced the granny from the next room to get to her through the balcony to help with the lock. She was late for the session, but yet she came. And what is more – she wore a necklace as if she went out on a date. It means that spring has come on Pluto!

Risks and challenges

We challenged ourselves with a number of quite difficult artistic tasks and there is danger that we will fail. But we have a really strong motivation – we will not forgive ourselves if we abandon the idea. Besides that, we have a good and professional team; we constantly involve independent experts to the creative process and adjust our work.

Experimental theatre is on the fringes in Ukraine, as are the geriatric house’s residents. There is danger that our production would have a narrow circle of spectators. For that reason, we reached out to an experienced art-manager and theatre producer from Great Britain – Natalie Querol. Natalie will help us with strategic planning, brand-building and marketing. This collaboration became possible thanks to an EDI Awards grant from the British Council.
