About

Who we are

The Ikkatsu Project is an organization dedicated to exploration, education and advocacy on environmental issues related to the health of the ocean.

Last year, we completed a sea kayak expedition that followed the roadless coast of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, and along the way, we surveyed remote wilderness beaches for marine debris, including debris that had crossed the Pacific following the Japanese tsunami of March, 2011. We worked with scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and others, and our findings are being used to help identify which beaches should receive priority for upcoming cleanup operations.

While we were doing all of this, we made a movie about it. Ikkatsu: The Roadless Coast premiered in November of 2012 and is currently being shown in select locations in Washington, Oregon and California. (Movie trailer below.) In addition to the exposure we received from media outlets like CNN, NPR and other national and international sources, the film is helping to raise awareness of the problem that marine debris represents for our environment, and for each and every one of us.

Where we're going, and why

We’re taking the project further in 2013, on another sea kayak expedition to Augustine, a volcanic island in south-central Alaska, where we’re planning on doing more beach surveys of remote and rarely-accessed shorelines, documenting marine debris and examining the effects that plastics have on vulnerable populations of sea birds.

Plastic makes up almost 90% of marine debris. That’s bad enough by itself… beaches choked with discarded plastic bottles and polystyrene scraps, rafts of polymers out in the open ocean that swirl around for decades, even centuries. But it doesn’t end there: plastic in the ocean acts as a magnet for pollutants, including PCBs and other endocrine disruptors that not only harm the wildlife, but that eventually enter the food chain and can pose a threat to our own survival.

Because we travel by kayak, we’re able to get in and out of beaches that would be difficult to get to by land and that might even present problems for other kinds of boats. Going by kayak makes for its own unique tales too, and the perspective that you get by being at water level becomes part of the overall story.

The 2013 Ikkatsu Expedition is a sponsored project of Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, a non-profit environmental organization. We will be partnering with Oikonos on developing field protocol for examining bird carcasses for plastic ingestion, something that is primarily done in the laboratory at this point. By making it possible for field exams to be used to collect more data, we'll be helping to widen the scope of these kinds of studies. And, because this expedition is sponsored by a non-profit, all contributions to the film are tax-deductible

We’ll be filming this expedition as well, and if last year’s stories and images are any indication, this year’s project, The Secrets of Augustine, will be even more exciting and informative. But we can’t do it alone. To make this film a reality, we need to get others involved. This is an important issue, and it affects everyone, no matter where you live, in every country, regardless of whether you live near an ocean or not. “Ikkatsu” is a Japanese word that translates as “together” or “united as one.” It’s a sentiment that perfectly describes our dependence on the oceans and everything that they provide for life on Earth. What we are hoping to do through this film is to raise awareness about how our actions and our choices have an impact on places around the world, and how we are indeed, all in this together.

There are elements within industry and government that would probably be happier if this film didn’t get made, if the truth about plastic debris wasn’t told at all. There is money to be made from polluting, from not having to account for the disposal of waste associated with manufacturing and production of any product… plastic is simply the worst of all possible examples. There are plenty of facts about plastic and the environment that should concern all of us, but for now, consider this one: Every bit of plastic ever manufactured – except for what has been incinerated – is still out there, in our landfills, in our environment and in our oceans.

How you can get involved

This is an important film, and it needs to be made. But there are significant costs associated with it that need to be accounted for. We have equipment expenses that need to be covered and the cost of transporting our gear to and from Augustine is substantial. In addition, we’ll have post-production costs that we’ll need to cover in order to make this film a reality.

The way it works is, your tax-deductible contribution is grouped together with the contributions of others, from all around the world, people who see the importance of getting the message out about the problems associated with marine debris. Each individual amount that is pledged is added to the total until our goal is reached. In return for getting involved in making this film a reality, we have put together some exciting rewards that will allow you to have a very real sense of ownership in the project. We are telling a story that needs to be told and you are in the position to give us the voice to tell it.

But the bottom line is that, if we don’t meet our goal, all the contributions are returned and we don’t make the film. It’s over before it gets the chance to even begin. And that would be a shame. We really are all in this together, something that serves to brings another side to the idea of “Ikkatsu.”

Regardless of where you live, the health of the ocean is critical not only to the fish and the birds who call it home, but to our survival as well. As the oceans go, so goes the planet. We hope that you’ll get involved as we attempt to bring this story to life.

Thank you for reading through this outline for our upcoming film, for reading through the list of rewards, and for doing your part to help make this project a reality. We couldn’t do it without you, and we are very grateful for the part you’re playing in this important endeavor.

Risks and challenges

Because we are approaching this film with the lessons learned from the previous one, we feel like we have a good handle on what will be expected of us as we work toward completion of the project. There will be difficulties involved in the shooting of the documentary - we will, after all, be operating in a remote location and subject to the realities of weather and wilderness - but we have tried to account for as many possible scenarios as we can.

We are giving this project 100% of our efforts, from the planning and pre-production stages right through to the final date of film release. We are already working on the permits that will be required, the music for the final cut and the logistical tangle of getting it all together. Throughout it all, we are keeping open channels of communication through the project website, our Facebook page and our monthly newsletter. We will do our best to return any emails we receive as the project moves forward and to keep everyone in the loop if there are any delays or unforeseen problems that do arise.
