THE BARDY BUNCH is a mash-up of a dozen Shakespeare plays, set in the 1970s and featuring the warring Brady and Partridge families.
Here's the story of a scribe named Stephen, whose play just got into FringeNYC.
Driven by my love of Shakespeare and adoration toward these iconic ‘70s sitcoms, THE BARDY BUNCH was completed in late 2010 in a furious five days. My goal: to mash two modern TV classics with a dozen of Shakespeare’s literary classics, and create a whiplash-inducing clash of genres that in the end, underscores the similarities they all share. Family strife, self-destructive egos, cutting barbs, musical interludes, cross-dressing. The connection is almost obvious, only no one’s made it yet.
Thanks to The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), and their 15 year tradition of supporting the untested and the unconventional, THE BARDY BUNCH has been invited to be part of what is the largest multi-arts festival in North America. They have more than 200 companies from all over the world performing for 16 days in more than 20 venues, and we'll be one of them.
So here's where we are: We have the script. The cast. The crew. The venue. And the audience...not just the 75,000 theatergoers who attend FringeNYC each year, but also anyone who grew up with the Bradys, the Partridges, Shakespeare, or simply want to see what happens when these worlds collide. (I'm eager to see what will happen, too!)
All we need is the funding, and with the generosity of you, the Kickstarter community, we can bring this very special episode of Shakespearean proportions to the masses!
