Fantasy Writer Resources & Writing Prompts
Writing Prompts and Resources for fantasy writers taken from years of studying fairy tales, folklore and history.
Once upon a time people told each other the stories, stories which were passed from parent to child for generations, stories which would eventually inspire people like; Tolkien, Miazaki, C.S. Lewis, and many more great fantasy writers and story tellers.
There are millions of these fairy tales and sagas, as well as thousands of years of history so modern writers haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of all the possibilities. As a folklorist I’ve been reading to these tales for decades.
I'm creating a series of books that will help inspire fantasy writers, to tell them about hundreds of the possibilities I've seen after studying these tales for so long. Possibilities and ideas most people never even imagined existed.
My hope is that through these books you’ll be inspired to come up with unique ideas, more engaging characters and richer fantasy worlds.
You can see some of the writing prompts and excerpts from the books here.
The Book on Japan will include;
Hundreds of Writing Prompts
Information on Traditional Life in Japan
Information on the Kami of Japan
Information on Japanese Shamanism and Folk Religion
The Book on Europe will include;
Hundreds of Writing Prompts
Traditional Life in various parts of Europe
European Folk Religions
Information to help you better come up with and write the motivations of characters who happen to be fairies or spirits.
In addition this book will give you the tools you need to interpret fairy tales so that you can write interesting stories based on them. It will also include some interpretations of fairy tales which will show among other things that; Puss in Boots is a Household Deity who helps to overthrow a Roman Deity, Rumpelstiltskin is an ancestor spirit or forgotten deity, Little Red Riding Hood is a Shaman/Witch or a Fairy, and much more.
Eurasian Steppes and the Yupik People
This book will help you to develop unique ideas based on peoples who are not as well explored in fantasy worlds as they probably should be. This book will include information on;
The traditional life of a number of different peoples.
Shamanism on the Steppes
The cosmologies that form the root of many of the most famous mythological cosmologies. The "Worlds Tree" for example likely has its origin in the Eurasian Steppes.
This book will also include information on the Yupik peoples who migrated to America from the Eurasian Steppes.
Sketchbooks and Notebooks
I will create three notebooks with prompts as well as additional information and ideas to help you generate ideas. These will include a notebook on The Fairies of the British Isles, another on Japanese Life and Lore, and one on The Spirits and Spirit Journeys of Eurasia.
Want to know about something specific? If you support me with $1000 I'll write a special mini-ebook which will be at least 10000 words long. This e-book will be on the subject of your choice, so long as that subject isn't overtly offensive, and will be given away with the book it best fits with, with your name included on the cover as well as a section about you if you want it.
I would like to thank the Band Jahazzar for the "Song Blinded By Dust" which is used in my video as part of the Creative Commons.
Risks and challenges
Okay so I know I'm supposed to talk about a lot of struggles I will have, the dangers that things might not get published, but these are books on topics I know a lot about. Plus I already have thousands of dollars in source material, a lot of which is pretty rare and not available at most libraries. And I've already written quite a bit so really other than sudden zombie apocalypses, fairy abductions, or simply ordinary illness these books should be finished on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
