How often do you want to keep looking at a clock after it has already told you the time? Probably not often! We have time-telling products all around us, but we only tend to notice them when we need them. I wanted to create a clock which can hold its own as an object of function when you need it and beauty when you don't. This became Blub Uno. The individual glowing numbers, housed in a glass cylinder, are a beautiful alternative to the common digital and analogue displays we’re all used to seeing. To complement the retro feel of the display, the electronics are mounted in a sleek housing machined from solid aluminium, giving it a modern aesthetic which fits in to any home or office setting. Its small size makes it ideal for small spaces, yet the large display makes it readable from anywhere in larger rooms.
I had some great feedback from backers on my last Kickstarter project (also being chosen for Wired Magazine UK's Gear of the Year 2014), and I’ve put all of it towards this new design to create a smaller, smarter and more beautiful desk clock.
Blub Uno is powered via USB, so you can power it by plugging it into your computer or any USB wall charger or outlet. There is a remote control to choose all the settings, including time (12/24hr), date, temperature (C/F), alarm, backlighting colour and display mode (direct, fade or crossfade), or you can use the two buttons located on the back of Blub Uno (just in case your remote isn’t on hand!).
Although only having a single digit display, Blub Uno easily shows the time by displaying numbers one after the other. For example, 12:30pm would display as ‘1… 2… 3… 0’. This provides a very simple and natural way to read the time.
The tubes are very easy to replace in the unlikely event one burns out. No tools necessary, just remove the old and push in the new! Spare tubes will be available also.
I'm looking for your help to make a production run of the parts, as making them myself by hand is a bit too tricky and time consuming for any more than a couple of units. The funds will also help with certification testing and protective packaging. I hope you enjoyed looking through my project and thanks for your support!
Risks and challenges
Through my experience having created a Kickstarter project before, as well as being an Industrial Designer, I have learned to manage risks and challenges throughout the product development stages. I have already developed good relationships with suppliers and manufacturers to support the fulfillment of Blub Uno and will provide regular updates with photos along the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
