Hey everybody! Music is a tricky business and you are my base. I need your help. You supported say grace and it went all around the world. Now I’ve got Land of Doubt, it is my fifth record. It comes out this month. My first three - mercy (2004), pretty world (2007) and cotton (2009) formed a trilogy with the theme everyone is at the mercy of another one’s dream. In 2013 I released say grace, thanks (again) to all of my Kickstarter supporters. It was the same as the other records but different. Just like life, the same but different.
Now I’ve recorded Land of Doubt. It is also different. The obvious difference is that I’m playing electric guitar on the record. But there are still songs about disappointment, trust and compassion. I wanted a cinematic feel, a mixture of sparsity and tension - and beauty. I always come back to beauty on my records. That’s shorthand for something that's bigger than me.
In 1986 I was on a train in Cuzco, Peru that was blown up by terrorists. It killed the people I was sitting with. I had a cut artery, brain damage, blown in ear drums and should have died - but I didn’t. I tried to figure out what it means to be blown up - to survive when others die. I wrote a lot. It was mostly drivel. But with the drivel came songs.
For me, doubt is part of living, part of being engaged in life, part of the great questioning of life. Curiosity can be fueled by doubt. My life got better when I accepted doubt as an integral part of life, as the counterweight to hope and security. By accepting uncertainty, by learning how to live with the unknowing, I began to find beauty in the moment. Beauty in the act of being alive. And especially the beauty of music.
This record is a meditation, a reflection on day-to-day life. The goodness, the struggle, the uncertainty. It gives me strength to share doubt. It gives me strength to hear others share doubt. With doubt comes clarity. With doubt comes hope.
I was fortunate to work with beautiful musicians on this record - Neilson Hubbard, Will Kimbrough, Dan Mitchell, David Henry and Eamon McLoughlin. There is deep beauty in Land of Doubt - the beauty of gifted musicians with a shared vision, offering their skills and voices in unity and the beauty of accepting doubt as a valuable necessary ingredient in life. Beauty and meaning came from living in the moment, the moments free of pain and panic.
Releasing a record these days has become a community effort, and I’m offering you the opportunity to be part of this project. The support of my fans and friends has gotten us to this point, I need help again. If you are able, and so inclined - we’ve got some special items to share with you. This record belongs to all of us.
We have tried to set this up so that everyone can find a level of support that fits them. We all have good times and hard times. No matter what, we are all in this (pretty world) together.
We’ve got the basic offerings, bundles for an enhanced experience and some unique pieces. I’ve included a guitar that I’ve used to write some of the songs on earlier albums, complete with a set list from when I used it for shows. We will also send everyone who pledges a link to a newsletter with updates and video streams before they reach the general public.
The minimum amount to pay my studio costs, the manufacture/distribution of the first run of CDs, publicity and radio support is $30,000. That's what I need. Anything we raise more than $30,000 will be used for publicity or travel or even shockingly enough to create more music.
Help if you can. I am grateful.

Risks and challenges
In this business, or any, there are always challenges. Sometimes risks.
The good news is the record is already recorded and ready to be released. With your help, the bills will be paid for its production and manufacturing, the wonderful artists who contributed their talents will be paid for their contributions, and we'll be able to engage publicity and promotion professionals to get 'Land of Doubt' out to the world.
With your help, we can make real waves with 'Land of Doubt'. It is a good record. And a powerful piece of art.
I have organized and secured a good team of experienced individuals to help me oversee the release of this album and the management of any money we raise - I feel good and confident about what's ahead - about the final product and being here, on Kickstarter with you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
