Hello Music Fans!
Thank you so much for visiting my Kickstarter. As you can see in the video, I'm not used to being in front of a camera -- and yes, I'm kind of a dork. But don't let my on-screen awkwardness sway your interest in this really exciting idea I have, one that will expose more audiences to the awesome Bay Area music scene and talent!
Who Is Barb Rocks And What's My Idea?
Under the moniker Barb Rocks, I've been passionately hosting shows and managing bands in the San Francisco Bay Area for 8 years and have been dubbed the "queen of the south bay scene" and the "hardest working woman in South Bay rock" by the Silicon Valley Metro Newspaper.
Those that have worked with me know that I pride myself on producing quality shows and supporting the local music scene however I can. I was part of the core people that created and hosted the Left Coast Live music festival which ran for three years in downtown San Jose, and I currently head the South Bay Chapter of Balanced Breakfast, a weekly music industry meetup group that is focused on growing the local music scene via networking and education.
Why Debut In Austin, TX?
The world's largest music conference occurs March 17-22, 2015, in Austin, TX, where hundreds of thousands of people join together to soak in as much music as possible. This is the perfect time and place to introduce the Bay Area's best bands to a large and eager audience. In 2014, I booked two of the bands I manage (Fritz Montana and The Trash Pop Icons) on a total of twelve unofficial showcases, which earned each of them some media buzz. Due to last year's success, I decided to throw my own showcase featuring Bay Area bands and debut it during the biggest music week in Austin for maximum impact. From there the showcase will hit the road, to expose many more cities to the talented Bay Area bands that deserve recognition and support.
What's With The Name Ugly Whale?
You're probably wondering about the name. It's kind of odd, I know. The explanation is simple -- I decided to call this traveling festival Ugly Whale in honor of my father who passed away in 2013. My dad always supported my love for music and my dedication to the local music scene, even attended many of my shows beaming with pride. My dad's name was Ueli Wahli, which comically enough would be corrected by spell check into Ugly Whale. My dad found this to be hilarious and happily embraced the name, making it the perfect name for this music showcase that will be as memorable as him. In order to get Ugly Whale off the ground and become the traveling showcase I envision it to be, I need to buy into a popular venue in Austin at $3500 for the debut show, and that is why I need your help!
So What's This Venue?
I have secured a popular venue on 6th Street called Darwin's Pub in downtown Austin, on Thursday March 19 from 9pm to 1:40am. This date and time is ideal as 6th Street will be packed full of people that aren't yet distracted by all the surprise performances by big name artists that get announced. This 300 capacity venue will have a built-in, music hungry audience ready to soak up the wonderful tunes of the Bay Area's best bands
Which Bay Area Bands Are Performing?
I have five extremely talented Bay Area bands confirmed:
These five unique bands perfectly represent the diversity and talent that the Bay Area has to offer, and will impress the audience so much, that Austin will be buzzing about Ugly Whale and what a quality showcase it is!
What If I Raise More Than My Goal?
$3500 is only the venue buy-in for March 19th. Any additional monies collected will go to other expenses involved in the Ugly Whale showcase, such as the graphics, promotional materials, printing and advertising costs. Any remaining funds will go towards travel reimbursements and future costs.
There are some pretty cool and unique rewards, so I really hope you will contribute!
Ugly Whale will start off with a bang and grow into a full blown festival, designed to support the Bay Area music scene. If you put your faith into my dedication and vision, I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
I would like to thank Tabrizi Productions for filming, editing, and producing the Kickstarter video -- I couldn't have done this without you Farran! xoxo
Thank you to E.R. Productions for their logo and graphic development!
Risks and challenges
I have secured Darwin's Pub through RedGorilla Music Fest, who have been putting on showcases in Austin for 7 years: http://www.redgorillamusic.com
RedGorilla is responsible for providing sound system, sound person, and backline gear for all their venues, including Darwin's Pub and my showcase, which is operating under the RedGorilla umbrella.
I will be in Austin starting March 17 to oversee all promotion, to make sure venue is set up properly and sound is good, and will be meeting with the bands prior to the showcase to ensure they are prepared and have all their gear. I will also be at the venue before and during the showcase to help troubleshoot any issues with the staff and sound guy. I have two alternate bands as backups in case any of the 5 selected bands have to drop off the showcase, plus other bands are interested in case additional bands are needed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
