About this project
Want a list of what you'll get for which pledge amount and/or pledge tier?
Thirty-six years ago, a journey began with a handful of heroes stopping off at a keep on some borderlands. Someone asked the name of the countries, and a world was born.
Shaintar (pronounced “Shine-tar”) is my magnum opus, the result of my greatest passions in gaming being invested in a world meant to at once evoke classic heroism against evil forces and inspire truly epic sagas involving grand story arcs and deep mysteries. Easily understood as a setting of high magic and heroic fantasy by anyone glancing at it, Shaintar gradually draws the players in as they discover the many relationships, threats, and stories that abound in the rich tableau that has taken decades to craft.
"The heart of any lasting and memorable roleplaying campaign is the setting. Is it vivid? Alluring? Full of mysteries, as well as straight-ahead challenges?
If the answer is 'Yes' to all of these, you are in good hands.
SHAINTAR is deep in 'good hands' territory.
Just paging through the Players Guide makes you want to play, and it’s genuinely hard to create a boring character using this book; everything works together to make your Hero interesting. And that’s even before you get to the four detailed Major Enemies lurking in Shaintar. Or the rules for alchemy, or the tantalizing glimpses we get of the Black Lantern and Grayson’s Grey Rangers . . .
A winner. Get this book." -- Ed Greenwood, creator of The Forgotten Realms®
You can discover much more about Shaintar for yourself for free! Just grab the Player's Guide and take a look.
The first book, Shaintar: Legends Arise, is already out. That book covers character creation and game play for Savage Worlds ranks Novice to Veteran. The core funding being asked for will help pay for developing and producing Shaintar: Legends Unleashed, as well as help Evil Beagle Games and Savage Mojo get things underway for future products.
Shaintar: Legends Unleashed covers Savage Worlds ranks Heroic and Legendary. There's a lot more to this that you might imagine, because we've conceived and executed some rather amazing things for those ranks of play. Savage Worlds fans will not only discover a bevy of new Racial, Combat, Power, and other Edges for the system, but a set of very special Heroic Edges that really makes that rank even more exciting, as well as a great many new Legendary Edges.
Possibly the most exciting thing that Legends Unleashed introduces, however, is High Magic. Folks who yearn for battlefield-changing and world-altering magics of great power and impact won't be disappointed. At the same time, GM's will be relieved to know these magics have been carefully designed and balanced to make them appropriately difficult and costly; not something thrown around casually, but used sparingly for those truly dramatic, climactic moments or for major rituals of permanent need. High Magic is layered directly on top of the normal Powers system, enhancing the Powers you already know without crafting entirely new mechanics to grasp.
There's plenty more – an enhanced Denizens section that brings truly epic villains and monsters to bear against these great heroes; an advanced system for Mass Battles that delves much more into the individual contributions a truly epic hero can make; and much more in the way of magic items, special gear, and that up-to-now elusive Arcfire that's been teased out for so long.
This and much more will be in Shaintar: Legends Unleashed, and that's just the beginning of what we have planned, should you all truly delve in and bring the support!
First off, our sincerest thanks for helping make a dream of decades come true. As well, everyone who contributes, even at the lowest level, will get exclusive sneak-peaks at text from the Legends Unleashed book, revealing some of the truly special elements of it.
A Note About Printed Versions: Before we get into the various levels and offerings, it bears pointing out that we are taking an atypical approach from most RPG Kickstarters. As Evil Beagle is relying exclusively on DriveThruRPG for making print version available, we have structured the ability to get a print version of either Legends Arise or Legends Unleashed as part of the Add-Ons offerings. This way we can focus on content and other offerings without having to struggle with the variables of print jobs based on orders, etc..
The Shaintar: Legends Unleashed Player's Guide is the part of the Unleashed product that focuses on what players need to expand their Shaintar characters to Heroic and Legendary ranks (in addition to Savage Worlds Deluxe, of course). This is a fine pledge level for folks who want the Savage Worlds rules stuff, primarily, or for players interested in Shaintar but not so sure about spending much more.
The Shaintar: Legends Unleashed PDF is the full book with everything discussed above, containing information for players and GMs alike. This is your “primary pledge level.”
The next levels up get into larger and larger packages of products, starting with the Ranger Corporal tier. By the way, the ranks are derived directly from one of the main groups that are suggested as a great faction for Shaintar players to begin their campaigns with – Greyson's Gray Rangers. The Ranger Corporal pledge level nets a copy of the full Legends Unleashed book, plus effectively a “site license” for the Legends Arise and Legends Unleashed Player's Guides to be shared with your gaming group. The latter book isn't going to be a free download, so this is a really great deal.
Beginning with Ranger Sergeant and going up all the way through Knight of the Silver Unicorn (the Piles of Goodies Tiers), you can get a number of PDFs from the Stretch Goals in addition to what you get for the Ranger Corporal level. The availability of these additional books will be based on which Stretch Goals we hit, but there are thirty-three (33) ultimately planned if all goes well, so you will hopefully have lots to choose from (look below to the Stretch Goals for descriptions of the specific books; some will be surprises for later reveals as we unlock more and more of them).
Now we get into the World Builder Tiers, where folks can become a direct part of the Shaintar setting in a real and meaningful way. All of these include at least the Ranger Corporal level of goodies, plus the ability to easily and inexpensively add on PDFs from the Stretch Goals.
At the Chosen of the Horn level, you're getting a chance to literally start ahead of the game with the ongoing Roll20/Google Hangouts based campaign I will, essentially, be running for everyone who wants to play. Whereas most folks will start as 0-point Novices straight from the book, you will get +10 Experience Points (two level ups) and, more importantly, have the very special Chosen of the Horn status from Legends Arise. This incorporates a number of special gifts, one per rank achieved. Also related to the Roll20/Google Hangouts outlet is the A Gathering of Rangers level, where I run a minimum four sessions of a mini-campaign for you and up to five others; this will be a custom experience for your group.
The It Takes a Village level lets you create and name a village, coming up with whatever elements – special features, characters, etc – you like (within reason) to add officially to the world of Shaintar. It will be used in one or more future releases, and will be official Shaintar canon. The Your Town level elevates this to a full-fledged town or small city, one which will actually be placed on the Shaintar map! This is in addition to being able to craft it like you can a village. The Keys to the Kingdom level - and there are two pledge levels now, a first and second wave that are almost identical - takes this up a few notches, allowing you to actually create a small kingdom or similar realm within one of the more open areas of Shaintar (such as the Wildlands or related places). This kingdom will be canon, go on the map, and like the Village and Town options, be used in one or more releases.
Of the Blood takes a slightly different, but just as interesting approach. You get to craft an entire family bloodline, complete with historical roots and present-day folks who can be important to the storylines ongoing.
The In Lord Severance's Service pledge level gives you a special insider access to all things Shaintar; you will be granted access to early-development documents, where your input and advice will be key to the future of the setting and the major story arcs. For those who like the idea of a custom adventure written specifically for their gaming group, there's The Call of the Raven; I will coordinate with whoever the Game Master of the group is to tailor the adventure to your campaign and characters.
An epic book with an epic Kickstarter needs Epic Tiers, of course!
A Shaintar Epic nets you the Knight of the Silver Unicorn rewards, plus a trip (travel and badge) to Gen Con in 2014 to participate in a unique adventure that will affect the course of major story arcs in the setting.
For A Gathering of Heroes, you get the Knight level as well, and this one brings me to you anywhere in the 48 states to spend the weekend running a special Shaintar game for you and yours.
If you go just a bit bigger, you can get The Golden Benny, which grants you Knight of the Silver Unicorn, Of the Blood, Keys to the Kingdom, In Lord Severance's Service, and Chosen of the Horn! All that, and you get your choice of A Gathering of Rangers or The Call of the Raven. Oh, and you also get your choice of A Shaintar Epic or A Gathering of Heroes!
Then there is the insane “No One Will Do This, But Oh, What if They Did!?!” level – A Legendary Vacation. It's a trip to New Zealand with Sean Patrick Fannon, the creator of Shaintar. You are flown to this magical land, where we also put you up in luxury accommodations near where many key scenes of “The Lord of the Rings” movies were filmed. We'll spend a week getting some touristy stuff in, but also gaming out a truly epic, monumental event that will shape story arcs in Shaintar for years to come!
There is a limit of six of these, and it's going to work like this – the first person to pledge this level gets me as their “guest.” Each additional person who pledges at this level adds another Evil Beagle or Savage Worlds luminary to the package, since all who pledge at this level will be going at the same time. The more who pledge at this level, the bigger and grander this package gets. If you go in with up to five friends, this becomes a gathering the likes of which has never been done in gaming. Not bad for a fantasy vacation, right?
There is so much more to see, play, and experience in Shaintar, and you can help us make that happen by getting us to the various Stretch Goals we have planned. First, there are the Legendary Lands of Shaintar Series of Guidebooks, which pull together tons of information about the world, it's people and cultures, and much more. Then there's the Black Lantern Reports series, dealing with various organizations and groups of importance and influence on the realm.
Some we're going to tell you about now. Some we will reveal as the journey progresses; after all, surprises are an important part of any epic adventure, right?
$42,000 – Guidebook 19: The Brinchie, long misunderstood by many, are revealed in this book. Their bloody history, including their dramatic departure from Norcan Darr, is unveiled at last. The Crescent Warriors are at long last explained and detailed, including numerous Edges. Other Racial and related Edges, as well as much more information about the powerful martial arts form, kalinata.
$43,000 – Guidebook 20: The Pirate Archipelagos. True to the name, this chain of islands just south of the Freelands is dominated by pirates, freebooters, and corsairs – a perfect breeding ground for Heroes and Villains. Seafaring and related Edges; rules and material for enhanced ship-to-ship combat on the seas of Shaintar; a Denizens section chock full of pirates, privateers, and sea-born creatures of terror.
As well as regular stretch goals based on the amount of backing the Kickstarter gets, we’ve released a series of truly special and wonderful bonus gifts.
Whether you want your epic adventures to come in a beautiful hardcover book, or want to add the Shaintar: Legends Arise book to your pledge, we’re here to help.
These add-ons are available to anyone who pledges at the Ranger 1st Class ($25) level or above, except the Novella Bundle which is available to anyone who pledges at least $1 (not counting the novella bundle itself).
How does it work? Once you're a backer, click the green 'manage my pledge' button in the top right hand corner of this page, add an amount to cover your add-ons, and we’ll email you after the Kickstarter finishes to find out which add-ons you were after.
By Kickstarter bulk-purchase rules, no single backer may order more than ten print books - sorry! If your whole gaming group wants a mix of books, then each person should pledge and order the print copies he or she wants.

So who is the team putting all of this together? Sean Patrick Fannon is the owner and “Lead Everything” for Evil Beagle Games. He's been in the RPG industry as a professional since 1988, and he's worked for just about everyone in the industry during that time. He still freelances for such companies as Fantasy Flight Games, Pinnacle Entertainment, and Blackwyrm Publishing. Shaintar is the world he's been working on since 1977, and this Kickstarter and all that follows represents the culmination of decades of work. If you want to know more about him, check out his bio.
Savage Mojo has been around, in one guise or another, for a long time. We create our own RPG products, we help others create theirs, and we're long-standing friends of Sean and the Shaintar universe. After all, members of the Savage Mojo family have been an integral part of delivering every edition of Shaintar to the public. We're very proud to be the ones running this Kickstarter for Sean. For a better idea of who we are and what we do, check out our bio.
Risks and challenges
I have worked as a professional writer, game designer, and in other areas of game publishing since 1988. The team I am working with is comprised of artists, editors, layout specialists, and business folk who have many decades of experience behind them. They've all failed at some things in the past, which were hard-but-powerful lessons, and the number of subsequent successes that have followed outweigh those missteps by an order of magnitude.
So what can go wrong? Well, in the world of publishing RPGs, there are a few choke points to consider:
• Art: Artists work on deadlines like any freelancer, but there are always chances that a piece will take longer than anyone anticipated. However, Savage Mojo has both enormous experience with high quality art projects with heavy image quantities. As well, their stable of top-notch artists is huge, making it pretty difficult not to find someone to step up and quickly fill a gap. As well, there's a rather large library of fantastic images that can be tapped if and when needed.
• Writing: I could get hit by a bus that's been crushed by a meteor shot out of space by alien invaders. That could put a serious damper on my ability to get words to screen. However, there are others who could and would step up, and so eventually Shaintar would continue even then. The really good news here is that easily 4/5 of the text is already written, not just for Shaintar: Legends Unleashed, but for most of the Stretch Goal books as well. So, yeah, we're in pretty good shape there.
• Editing, Layout, etc..: Again, Savage Mojo is a fantastic house of professionals who know how to produce; Aaron “Ace” Acevedo is also the Art Director for Pinnacle Entertainment, so you know he's one of the industry's very best. He has awesome folks around him to help, and I also have a huge array of pros to call on if needed. There are, in other words, back-ups for the back-ups.
• Shipping: In the case of the few physical items that we are talking about shipping, rest assured that anything lost will simply be replaced and re-shipped.
• Finances: To be completely honest, even if this Kickstarter doesn't somehow make it, these books will eventually be done. This is, however, the best way to get them done quickly and with excellent quality.
Hopefully this reassures any concerns you might have. If not, however, we are incredibly interested in knowing all of your questions, concerns, and ideas. We want this to be a fully interactive event that you feel an invested part of. Hopefully, this will be fun for all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
