My name is Mike Lunapiena. I also sometimes go by the nickname of Cello Mike. Unlike most people who play cello professionally, I started on the cello when I was 16 & I was accepted into music school one year later. I am 23 now. I also came from from a family that never had a lot of money. A little less than a year ago, my father died just before I was set to go into the studio to record my first solo album. In the time since then, I've been struggling to pay my bills while developing a career as a professional cellist.
I always loved rock and heavy metal music. When I was in music school, I studied and was exposed to to many different styles of music, including Irish Folk, Flim, Classical, Jazz, Industrial, Rock/Metal and more. I started to write and improvise music in an attempt to combine the various styles of music that had affected my life. I also began to freelance in the New York City area doing musical theater pits & playing with rock bands. Today I play cello in the progressive rock band Edensong and I often play in subways, coffeehouses, clubs and bars.
A year and a half ago, I wrote and recorded a solo cello album on my laptop. It started out as an album of solo cello improvisations and it quickly became something much bigger. At the time I didn't realize that it wasn't usable professionally. I would need to enter a professional studio and take advantage of the equipment they had there in order to really do justice to my creative vision. To my knowledge, this would be the first concept/story album out there on the cello. It would also be one of the only releases by a string player whose primary influence was heavy metal and who was secondarily influenced by classical music (instead of the other way around).
Here’s how you can help me make this album more than just a demo on my computer. I need to get into a professional studio and record it. Sean Harty will produce, engineer, and mix the album, and JBS Recording Studios will let us use their space and equipment.
You can help me raise the $2,600 to pay for the studio time, mixing, mastering, artwork and the production costs of the physical cd. I will be pressing 300 copies of the album for sale at shows. Additional copies will be available online through Reverb Nation.
If we raise more than the goal, I will use the extra money to increase the number of cds I press. I will also schedule a small CD release tour for the end of summer/beginning of fall this year (which will hopefully allow me to book a bigger tour the next time around).
Will you help me record and share my music?
