The Jack and Casie Kickstarter prototype features:
• 2 areas (8 segments), and 2 bosses
• 13 enemies
• Thief gun
WHAT IS JACK AND CASIE?
Jack and Casie is an Inventory Action Game about the misadventures of Jack, a walking talking superdimensional storage closet, and Casie, who can shoot a gun. As they make their way to the distant Capital, they'll encounter the mysterious Ancient Army, piece together the history of the Frontier, and cross paths with the people who call it home.
Basic gameplay revolves around a hybrid of a versus puzzle game and a turn based JRPG. Stock items into your inventory, each with unique effects and properties, to use in battle as weapons or equipment. With experimentation, items can be used to exploit enemy weaknesses to enable a Rush attack, allowing the player to instantly take another turn.
Explore 12+ zones, including side zones, each with unique items and enemies! Along the way, meet a colorful cast of characters on adventures of their own.
Collect hundreds of items with unique purposes that can even be used in combat! Combine them, convert them, cook them, (craft them,) and discover new ways to play!
Play as fast as you want! Item-based progression means that you'll always be ready to take on new zones, as long as you're up to the challenge!
Customize your game with the Armor system! Mix and match equipment to unlock new abilities and effects! Just throw 8 ballistic vests over Casie's head! Who's going to care? (Casie.)
Discover the history of the Frontier, and the mysterious Ancient Army! Explore abandoned cityscapes, lazy countrysides, and some woods but with robots!
14,000$ • Full game
14,020$ • Full game but also I'll get Bayonetta on steam
20,000$ • Sound Test, Mac build and Achievements, and animations using Spine
With a little extra budget, the project will be able to afford freelance programmers and artists, freeing up the core developer(s?) to focus on various extra features.
35,000$ • Marathon mode, Rush mode
With a little more extra budget, the project will have the time to add various new gameplay modes. Explore the Frontier as a traveling merchant in Marathon mode, or speed your way through the main storyline in Rush Mode as fast as you can with unique enemies and encounters! See how the story would change if Jack and Casie had gotten to events just a little sooner!
(These modes will be unlocked after clearing the basic game.)
50,000$ • Bonus gameplay and story content: Post-game Content, Superbosses, and Sidestories With a medium-to-large extra budget, we'll have time to add directly onto the game! Just because the story's over doesn't mean the Frontier's out of things to do- revisit old friends, reveal secret areas, and challenge the new, even more powerful enemies within!
(This mode will be unlocked after clearing the basic game... like we said.)
80,000$ • Casie and Jack
With so large a budget, we might as well just make two games- Play through the main story as Casie! See old friends and shoot old enemies from a different, taller perspective. In battle, use Action Commands to duck gunfire, shoot bullets harder, and trigger Rush attacks to use everything in your inventory! Jack's there, too, I guess.
(This mode will be unlocked after clearing the basic game.)
Get the game on release, sent to your email address DRM-free! Steam keys will also be available, if that's more your speed. (Microsoft Windows required)
Your name will appear in the credits of the game! As long as it's PG.
A PDF file full of concept art, notes, and in-design documents! This file will include everything from placeholders to finished, in-game art. Great if you want to see the design process, get into the developer's heads, or get into game development yourself!
PIXEL ART COMMISSIONS
Get a piece of character art in the style of Jack and Casie! If you want, you can commission an item in the style instead.
(This character will not appear in the game. They will just look like they should have)
DESIGN AN ITEM
Work with the developers to design an item! It can be anything- a weapon, a recipe, an inside joke. A developer will contact you after the Kickstarter to help hash out your ideas.
Jack and Casie has been in development since late 2016. It's very first prototype (though it existed in some form before even that) was made for Ludum Dare 36, before eventually resurfacing a couple months later as a full-color, fuller-featured prototype. But, because of pressures from my full-time freelancing job, progress on the project began to slow until it came to a complete halt.
Without a budget, and with such a small 'team', the Jack and Casie project will be stuck spinning it's wheels for the foreseeable future. If that happens, despite all the time and effort we have put into it, the project will simply have to be shelved.
With the success of this Kickstarter, not only will we have the funding to afford to work full-time on Jack and Casie for the next year but we hope to get the word out to attract a couple new hands to the team, as well as earn the funds to hire them. Should everything go as planned, Jack and Casie should be ready for release by the summer of 2019.
Risks and challenges
Short of critical injury or death, nothing should stop Jack and Casie's development after it's been funded.
In addition, all of Jack and Casie's rewards are set to be delivered digitally. That means we won't have to worry about losing anything in the mail, either.
