About this project

Concentricism will (possibly) be the first ever vinyl EP consisting of photographs, rather than music. I have developed a simple app for PC or Mac that can encode bitmap images to audio tracks, so that they can be mastered and cut to dubplate - or pressed to vinyl as a proper release. Here's the good part - I have also coded a (more complicated) app to play the images back - which I will be making available with the release. Concentricism will be a limited-edition run of 500 copies of a 10" vinyl EP, containing 12 tracks/photographs selected at random from contributors. Funds raised from pledges cover the costs of mastering, pressing, designing and releasing the EP.

The first digital camera recorded images on audio tape, and NASA sent images into space on gold discs in 1977. This project opens the doors to a host of creative possibilities in the strange space between image and audio. Noisy, glitchy and fun, this is an art project which explores ideas of permanence, memory and technology, yelling 'to hell with progress!'  I want to play with colliding vinyl and photography - and if you think this is exciting, so can you! Can you DJ with images? Can you mix and scratch? Yes, now you can, in a way. It is going to be great to see what use people make of this. Oh, and I am starting a record label to host future projects (check out the Youtube channel).

By pledging, you get the chance to have your images encoded and pressed on the first full-editioned release on Buncefield Records.  If you pledge above the set amount, you will be contacted and asked to send me an image, which will then go into a draw for inclusion on the disc. You can send whatever you want, one image per pledge. Twelve randomly selected images from those submitted will be processed and cut to disc. By pledging the set amount or higher, you will receive a copy of the disc whether your images are chosen or not. Higher pledges will attract richer packages, including other even rarer discs and other goodies. I can also cut a one-off disc just for you for the top reward!

Previous versions of the project have been exhibited at the EMerge Gallery, Townsville, Australia, and showcased in the Townsville Pecha Kucha night, March 2013. (The project video - UnVoyager - contains images from these events)

Risks and challenges

The process, including the apps to process and decode the audio, has been tried and tested in a one-off pressing, featuring images from a random selection of collaborators. This is showcased on the video - the code has been working on my mac running osX and I am in the process of adapting it for PC. As it is pretty simple code written in the programming language Processing, it should be easily adaptable for all platforms - however I will work with all my backers to make sure the code works for them. Simple as the process is, there should be very few issues which cannot be easily solved. Processing is robust and adaptible, and designed for projects such as these.
Getting the audio into the computer requires a USB turntable, an RIAA pre-amp or a USB audio interface - so collaborators will need to acquire these things (I have hacked it with second hand gear, though, so can help with advice on interfacing).
This is an experiment - the sounds are noisy, like listening to a fax machine, and the images are striated and glitchy, but not bad given the challenges. It is not (at this stage) meant to be a serious attempt to store images permanently on vinyl, though future releases may move in this direction. Please take it in the spirit of adventure in which it is launched!
