The saints favor her, else-wise a peasant girl like Kate Carpenter would never be apprenticed to the kingdom’s master healer. But her patron saint also marks her ready for the duty of tending to a mission that must cross the ice-bound mountains. Their little kingdom faces invasion by a vast empire and desperately needs allies; across the snow-filled pass, through the deathly thin air, is a country that’s held off the empire and may be willing to lend an army.
Kate knows about frostbite and the everyday injuries of wilderness travel. She can heal those.
She’s not ready for the attentions of a ne’er-do-well knight and the kingdom’s only prince, though.
And she isn’t ready for the monsters that harry them night and day, picking off their archers first, wearing the party to exhaustion, pushing Kate beyond the limits her healing abilities.
She must keep them alive, or her blood will be on the snow too.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK
Hello! You can call me L.
Like a lot of writers, I've been learning the craft for a long time and I've only recently become confident enough to take the plunge into publishing. I'm going to blame most of that on the Viable Paradise writing workshop, which I graduated from in 2011.
I know it's traditional to defend one's choice to self-publish, but I'm not going to. My work will either stand on its own or it won't.
This Kickstarter project will fund the polishing, preparation and packaging of my novel DISCIPLE, PART I: For Want of a Piglet. I want to hire an editor to help me polish the story, a proofreader to check for typos and punctuation, an artist to create a great cover I can use for promotional goodies, a run of print-on-demand paperbacks, and some online promotion. I'll be doing the design and layout work myself, since I have 15 years' experience as a graphic designer. I plan to make it available as an e-book through all the major retailers. There will also be paperbacks available as print-on-demand through Amazon.
PART II through PART VI will follow as they are ready.
Cover artist: $900
CreateSpace.com print run of 150 paperbacks: $443
250 Bookmarks: $87
PumpUpYourBook.com Bronze promotional package: $300
Kickstarter and Amazon fees: +10%
August and September: Work with my editor to polish the manuscript. Artist creates the cover artwork.
October: Proofreader checks the manuscript and I fix the file. Begin layout of the paperback and e-book, hopefully. Send bookmark to be printed.
November: Finish layout of the paperback and send it to CreateSpace. Finish layout of the e-book and publish it electronically.
Promoting DISCIPLE before Christmas would be wonderful, of course, but we'll have to see how that works out. At the very least, I can organize a small blog tour myself.
I will publish Part I in November, 2012. Keep an eye on the book blog at DISCIPLES OF THE FOUNT for news and information!
If we get to $3,600: I will use both the bookmark design above and the cover artwork -- everyone who gets a bookmark will get one of each design.
If we get to $5,000: we will have paid for the editing and proofing of Part II: Claims Laid and I will send an e-book copy of that to everyone who purchased an e-book of Part I.
