I want to raise enough money to commission a short story from master storyteller and novelist, Ken Scholes. (I'll talk more about Ken in a bit.) But this won't be just any short story. No, this story will be inspired by the title of one of the many works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Edgar Allan Poe is mostly known for his macabre tales such as "The Tell-Tale Heart", “The Cask of Amontillado”, and "The Fall of the House of Usher". However, he also wrote detective mysteries like "The Murders of the Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter", as well as retro science fiction like "Some Words With a Mummy" and "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfall". And of course there is also his poetry.
I have enjoyed the writings of Poe for many years, so much in fact, that when I started my own fiction podcast, Journey Into..., I included some of Poe's stories, and even started a writing contest in his honor as well as a month dedicated to good ol' Uncle Edgar. After running the contest for a couple years, I realized how cool it would be to pay some of my favorite contemporary authors of today to write a story based on the same premise: a compelling story using one of the titles from the works of Poe.
Enter Ken Scholes.
Ken is the award-winning and critically acclaimed author of over forty short stories, and four novels from his 5-book Psalms of Isaak series. He is currently writing the fifth and final book.
My first experience with Ken was reading/listening to his story "Edward Bear and the Very Long Walk" on the Escape Pod podcast. That story captured both my heart and imagination, and I have enjoyed pretty much everything from Ken that I have read since.
I am so happy that Ken has agreed to write this Edgar Allan Poe inspired story for me. However, he also deserves to get paid for his work, and at professional rates. This project will fund paying Ken Scholes for his story, along with extra costs, rewards, etc.
If you like good fiction, and you are a fan of Poe and/or Ken Scholes, please fund this project. If funded, the story will run on the Journey Into... podcast both in digital text form, and as a full-cast audio production, along with music and sound effects. I will do everything I can to reward you with an excellent experience in fiction.
Risks and challenges
I have set the production release date from this project for May 2015. Personally, I think it will be complete prior to that date, but since this involves asking other people for money, I extended the time frame to insure I could deliver what I promised.
There are two risks that I can see for this project.
Risk #1 - What if Ken Scholes cannot finish writing the story in a timely manner?
Ken is totally on board with this project and excited about writing a Poe-inspired tale. Yes, sometimes life gets in the way and interferes with deadlines and obligations. However, I know Ken is a professional, and has met deadlines and obligations before. Also, this a not a novel; it is an 8000 word or so short story.
Risk #2 - What if there is a delay in production on my part?
As stated above, there is always a risk of life getting in the way. However, I feel confident in completing the production in the given time frame. I am also very dedicated to making this happen to insure future productions with other pro authors.
I have been involved in full-cast productions for over three and a half years now, so I know what it takes. I have also produced a full cast audio book for Audible.com, Tim Pratt's YA science fiction novel, The Nex.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
