The Dungeon X Tile kit will be injection moulded from 6 moulding tools. 5 of these tools weigh over 2 tonnes (4,700 lbs) and each have multiple cavities. This method has large start-up costs but result in cheaper production costs over larger numbers. The result of this means that we can provide you with a huge kit of over 70 parts for less cost than hand-poured resin tiles.
Other tile projects require the backer to have a 3D printer to produce parts. The main aim of Dungeon X Tiles is to give EVERYONE a decent, dependable, high-quality tile set. We are very confident that $150 will be cheaper than purchasing a 3D printer and the material to print the parts (even if you have the 300x300mm print bed). The prototypes featured in the promotional videos cost over $300 in printing material and was fabricated on a $6,000 printer. Don't get us wrong though, we love many of the amazing 3D printed tile sets!
This kit is so big that it has the unfortunate consequences of being heavy. At nearly 2 kg with packaging (4.4 lbs) the average price of shipping from Melbourne Australia internationally is around $35 AUD. Kickstarter requires you to add the shipping on to the funding goal which results in a virtual $140,000 increase (for the desired 4,000 backers of this project). This is purely virtual as the actual funding target is $600,000 ($150 plus shipping per backer). It just makes it seem like the goal is bigger than what it is.
At the end of the day, we have spent many months developing this kit and working closely with tool makers and logistic companies to get the price to where it is. There is a lot of value include this kit for $150 + postage. Help add to the tabletop RPG community by supporting this project.
