The People Who Made Me

Everyone who's ever lived has had a dad and mom
And they did too, it goes far back, a line so very long
Those who lived before us we call our "ancestry"
Those people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me

Some of them walked miles and miles to find a brand new home
They pushed and pulled day after day, worn fingers to the bone
All while bravely wondering where their new life would be
Those people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me

Some led great adventures blazing trails where none had dared
Through mountains, jungles, ice and snow they persevered when scared
Some built ships and found new lands, far across the sea
Those people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me

Some lived in crowded cities others lived on grassy plains
Some baked bread and some grew food by waiting for the rains
Some marched in armies off to war at emperor's decree
Those people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me

And some were kings, with lands and gold and armies to command
Some were priests, both good and bad, who taught with outstretched hand
And some were slaves, those forced to work and beg on bended knee
Those people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me

They told many different stories when the world was new and strange
They had so many things to learn and ideas to exchange
Our lives they'd find astonishing, if our lives they could foresee
Those people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me.

And perhaps one day we'll leave the earth to travel space and more
From seas and shores to rocket ships, new worlds we will explore
And when that day has happened, when space becomes our sea
We'll remember all the people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me.

And then will come the future, when all our lives have passed
And there just may be a child and a question they might ask
And YOU might be the answer then to this dear child's plea
"Tell me of the people, who made the people, who made the people, who made me"

I recently found a wonderful illustrator who I am confident can do a phenomenal job illustrating "The People Who Made Me" to make it appealing for children.

I have paid this illustrator for a sample illustration to see what sort of pictures could be expected as well as to show this sample illustration to you, my kickstarter readers. Above, at the top of this page, is the sample full color custom illustration by the illustrator.

The purpose of this kickstarter page is to give you, the viewer, the opportunity to read the complete poem and to see the sample illustration provided to go with it. If you like what you read and you like what you see, and if you would like to be a part of giving life to this children's book then Kickstarter will make that possible.

The total cost of illustrating, publishing and printing "The People Who Made Me" is estimated to be $2000. Because of this I have created a funding goal of $2000. If I can raise $2000 by pre-selling copies of "The People Who Made Me" then I will have the money necessary to hire the artist to complete the illustrations.

But is there a risk?

If you decide to order a copy (or more than one?!?!) but I am unable to raise the full $2000 by the end of the thirty day then your money will not be taken from you and the project will go "unfunded". You have nothing to lose. Either you preorder a copy and I manage to raise the full $2000 and you get the book that you pre-ordered. Or you preorder a copy but I don't end up raising all the money that I need and the project goes "unfunded" and you don't pay anything. No risk. Just the possibility of a pretty sweet children's book.

But I only have thirty days to raise the $2000.

Questions I assume you might be interested in:

So, how long will this process take?
I don't know for certain. I know the sample illustration took two weeks from the day that I ordered it to the day I got the final copy. If the rest of the illustrations take as long I anticipate the illustrating process will take 18-20 weeks from funding.

How many pictures do you need?
I anticipate I will need 10 full color pictures and two black and white illustrations. This breaks down to 8 main pictures (one for each stanza), a book cover picture, a picture for the back of the book, and a black and white simple line drawing for the beginning and the end of the book.

What will the pictures be of?
I haven't decided on all of them yet. I know there will be a pioneer style picture for the stanza that talks about those that "Walked miles and miles to find a brand new home".

I anticipate a really cool picture of a king and some pretty sweet pictures of armies. Also, don't forget space! The space picture (complete with rocketship) should be awesome!

Who do you think will buy this book?
People that like it! People with children, or grandchildren or great-grandchildren, people with nieces and people with nephews, school teachers, church teachers, parents who like reading bedtime stories to their children. People who feel a kinship to their ancestors and want to share that feeling with the children they love. There are a LOT of potential buyers for this book.

What sort of parents do you think will like this book the most?
Awesome ones! I think parents that like to read to their children will like this book. Also parents that feel a strong connection with their own ancestors and who wish to explain this feeling to their children. Parents that have their own family stories to share with their kids should also like it. Parents that enjoy children's poetry and colorful pictures should as well.

What sort of children do you think will like this book the most?
Children that have awesome parents... you get what I'm saying you awesome parents? Pre-order this book! Your kids will love it! Any kids who like simple rhyme schemes, space, jungles, armies, kings, ocean voyages, exploration, and colorful pictures should like it.

Risks and challenges

This is the section where I'm supposed to outline the risks of the project. I don't see a ton of risk involved, it's pictures not building a prototype of some batman gadget.

Reasons why I see risk as being minimal:

1. I have already written the entire poem (no writers block, yay!)
2. I have already found the illustrator
3. I have already paid for a sample illustration
4. I have already determined that the sample illustration is acceptable
5. I have already been given an estimate of the total illustration costs

The only problem that might come up is that the illustrator decides to change things, or forgets how to draw, or gets typhoid or amnesia or something terrible like that. Absent some unforeseen circumstance, if this kickstarter manages to be successful enough to raise the $2000 that I need I can't imagine not being able to put the product together.

I want to see this book in my hand and I will follow through to make sure it happens if this kickstarter is funded.
