An ancient king returns to enslave your world and only you have the power to stop him! As a descendant of the noble line of warrior-wizards known as Magi, you’ll have to master your powers in order to awaken the hero within. But you face another challenge, for you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and before you can master your magic you must master your blood sugar. Equipped with the powerful arrow launching Witch-Cannon, an arsenal of spells, and your trusty robotic assistant AIMO, you must venture into the enemy’s land and defeat the tyrant who threatens your world!
My name is Adam Grantham and I'm a Game Designer. I've had type 1 diabetes for over 19 years. I've always wanted to make a game that helped people better understand the disease, especially newly diagnosed kids. But as a professional Game Designer I wanted to make sure the game was first and foremost, AWESOME.
In 2008 I formed Game Equals Life and set out to do just that. I worked with a team of student artists to develop a simple prototype and here's what we came up with:
Now, with your backing, I want to develop a full-fledged version of The Magi for public release and prove that a video game can not only teach about diabetes but can be awesome while doing it.
Wait a sec?! Video games can teach people about diabetes?
Things that teach people about diabetes can be AWESOME?
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!?!
I'll tell you!
The Magi and The Sleeping Star is unlike any health game before. Rather than coming from the realms of medical research and academia, it comes straight from the game industry. I knew from the beginning that if the game wasn't fun, it wasn't going to be teaching anyone anything. So we designed a core game that was strong enough to stand alone as an exciting, evocative adventure. Then, using a lifetime of experience with diabetes, I designed a real-time blood sugar simulation that ties directly into the game's action. Take a look at our prototype demo to see how it all works:
The blood sugar simulation works with the game's core combat mechanics, but the game isn't about diabetes. That wouldn't be very awesome. Instead, it's about a hero fighting to save the world from ancient tyrants and their robot armies. That hero just happens to have diabetes. And thus, no matter how epic your destiny, sound blood sugar management is a must.
Sounds great! Tell me more!
Once we've achieved our funding goals we'll move beyond the simple prototype to develop the full publicly releasable Magi experience. The full game will include:
• Powerful Magic Abilities - Evade attacks and glide through the air using Magic Dash and Jump. Freeze enemies and their attacks in mid-air using the mighty Seize Spell. Guard yourself from incoming attacks using the powerful Spirit Shield ability. Set traps that shake the earth beneath your enemies' feet with proximity Quake-Mines. Upgrade your powerful arrow-launching Witch-Cannon and grow stronger throughout your adventure. The more backing we receive the more character advancement we can offer.
• Customizable Hero - Choose between a male or female hero and customize your character’s color scheme and style. Choose your character's name and even set their Carb Ratio and Insulin Sensitivity.
• Epic Boss Battles - Face the colossal Kings of Old World in fierce combat! Use your incredible power to bring down the towering giants!
• Expansive Fantasy World - Explore a large diverse world with lush green fields, stone dry deserts, arctic wastelands, and alien landscapes.
• Classic Adventure Game Story - Uncover lost histories as you battle through the diverse ruined landscapes of Old World. Prevent King Merodach's second war and fulfill your destiny!
We'll be working with the talented and seasoned development team at The Workshop Entertainment to bring The Magi to life. Your backing will go to creating character and environment art, design tools, AI, effects, animation, gameplay systems, and an original soundtrack.
Depending on your level of backing, you'll be able to engage in the development process to varying degrees. You can get an early release of the game and give feedback to help the last phase of balance, polish, and technical quality assurance. You can even vote on concept art and play a role in deciding how enemies, equipment, environments, and spells look in the final product.
After approximately 1 year the game will be released for download on Windows PC and all the world will see the names of those who backed The Magi, forever immortalized in the game's credits and in-game holographic monuments.
This is a rare opportunity to take part in a project unlike any other: a game that will demonstrate the educational power of entertainment software while proving that health games can be just as compelling as traditional games.
Kickstarter offers a revolutionary opportunity to content creators like us. For the first time we are able to speak directly with the people we intend our product to serve and work hand in hand with you to bring it to life. Projects like The Magi target a specific audience and offer a unique and focused solution to very specific challenges. This makes it perfect for crowd-sourcing because it allows us to go to you and say, "Hey, we had this idea we thought was pretty cool. We'd like to make it for you. Here's what it'll cost. What do you think? Wanna throw down and be a part of it? We have some cool rewards," and then you're like, "Oh heck yeah! That is cool! I always wanted that. I'm totally in!" and then we are both like "Awesome! This game is gonna rock! Thanks Kickstarter!" (in unison)
Does The Magi sound like the project for you? Have you found a level of backing that fits just right? Great, glad to hear it! Now's your chance to enlist more in the cause by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter. Help us build momentum by getting 5 people you know to join in and back The Magi too. Keep the Backer train a rollin' and we'll see The Magi and The Sleeping Star brought to life!
Our greatest challenge will be achieving our intended epic scale on a $200,000 budget. In preparation we've designed The Magi for maximum flexibility allowing us to adjust level and character design scope while keeping true to the core vision and mechanics.
When it comes to epic scale, art production is one of the greatest challenges for 3D games on a budget. In preparation for this challenge we've referenced older 3D games with art styles that have held up well over time despite (or perhaps because of) their simplicity. The Magi's stylized fantasy art direction will allow us to deliver inspiring visuals without spending all our resources trying to achieve the hyper-realistic, gritty graphics that bog down many modern game productions.
We'll also be using the Unreal Development Kit which empowers us to deliver a quality core action game without having to reinvent the wheel. Our team's vast experience with the UDK toolset allows us to rapidly experiment and iterate, delivering a product well beyond what could otherwise be achieved.
As you might imagine, going beyond our funding goals will minimize all these risks and empower us to deliver a larger game at even higher quality. We encourage you to join the fun and spread the word to help The Magi be a success!
