There is a savage beauty in the depths of the swamp. For each drop of blood spilled into those dark waters, the delta rises. She thrives. She continues to resist the encroaching gulf. So too is the way of her people, who despite endless struggle, continue to find love and wonder in the ruins of the natural world.
The Delta Enduring Tarot pays tribute to these ebbs and flows, and to the lives of those that continue to make the deep south a more verdant, just, and enduring landscape--despite the storm of oppression always on the horizon.
The goal of this project is to present a tarot deck inclusive of many facets of Southern Culture. It pays homage to the lives of those people whose shared experiences and determination have driven great positive change in the south, but have been most often omitted from the imagery of cartomancy--people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, those with mental illness, immigrants, self-empowered women. Some cards are painful. The systemic racist, homophobic, misogynistic attitudes of the Mississippi Delta cannot be hidden by the beauty of a swamp sunset, and this deck will not attempt to do so.
The deck consists of 82 vividly illustrated full-color cards on thick glossy cardstock. Each card captures the classic visual themes of the traditional tarot, while weaving in imagery of life in the Mississippi Delta--the natural and the surreal, the joy and despair, the mundane, and the unseen.
Like the traditional tarot, the Delta Enduring Tarot consists of four suits of cards, though each has been re-created in images emblematic of Delta culture. The pentacles, the earth element suit, representing the material world, has been replaced by cast iron skillets. Cups become oysters. Swords, the air sign, are now moths-- beautiful, and as fleeting as the introspection they represent. Wands in this tarot have roots, depicted by the stately live oak.
Egan is an illustrator native to New Orleans, where they reside. They practice allopathic medicine and the esoteric arts, with a predilection for healing communal ritual and the utilization of focus items: spirit boards, altarscapes, and the tarot. They are also the writer and illustrator of the comic book series, JOB: A COMIC, and the comic strip, WeBitched. They are a co-founder of Oily Pelican Press.
Each deck of the Delta Enduring tarot will be printed locally in the South. When it arrives, each deck will come in a box, individually wrapped. The meaning of each card will be available on the Delta Enduring website, deltaenduring.com, with plans to release an booklet in the near future for ease of reading. Decks purchased through kickstarter funding will receive the deck below its intended retail price.
DOUBLET TAROT CLOTH
A screen-printed cloth with artistic motifs from the Delta Enduring for laying out two-card "doublet" spreads of the tarot. The doublet can be useful in making choices, examining pros and cons, deciding yes or no, now or then. It can also be used to gain introspection into two polarized ideas--love and hate, birth and death, success and failure. These are short, to the point readings that this tarot cloth is created to guide.
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
Included in some reward tiers are limited edition prints of cards from the tarot deck. Each print is a large format version of the cards themselves, printing on glossy cardstock and signed by the artist.
Hand-made canvas cases for your tarot deck, with screen printed imagery on one side. LIMITED to 30.
All Kickstarter funding will go directly toward printing, packaging, and shipping costs for producing and distributing first edition Delta Enduring Tarot decks. Any surplus funds will go toward printing more copies of the deck, and toward the creation of Delta Enduring Tarot companion book containing meanings and other images of the Delta Enduring Project.
At this time, the Delta Enduring Tarot is over 50% complete, with expected completion in July 2017. Cards should be printed and shipped by September of this year.

Risks and challenges
As most of the images are completed for the deck, at this time, funding is the only factor standing between you and introspective readings with this deck in your hands. Deadlines are important, and barring printing complications, the deck should be ready to ship by September 2017. If there are any issues that arise, be assured that you will be notified promptly by myself.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
