Woven in with the excerpts will be a unique visual presentation, along with special guests.

OUR GOAL for this recital is to bring relevant and enjoyable music to all kinds of listeners as well as to promote and raise money for a full production of "Two Yosemites," scheduled for a world premiere in June, 2017. This means your contribution will go towards more than just the recital but support this groundbreaking project, celebrating our nation's history and shared natural heritage. Our modest budget for this recital is to cover the costs of renting the space, compensating our artists and documenting the event. Any excess funds will go towards the full production premiering in June, 2017. The budget for the June production is an ambitious $25,000 and we are relying on multiple sources of funding, from grants and corporate sponsors to individual donors like you. We have already received over $9,000 in foundational and in-kind support!
THE OPERA sets to music the meeting between President Theodore Roosevelt and conservationist John Muir on their historic, 1903 camping trip in Yosemite National Park. Arguably the most famous camping trip in history, it marked a pivotal moment in the emergent American Conservation movement to save and protect lands and wildlife from the exploitative impulses of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Presented by Opera Theater Oregon, the fully staged world premiere in June 2017 will include several outdoor and indoor performances with orchestra throughout Portland. THE HISTORICAL FIGURES
Risks and challenges
When John Muir set foot in Yosemite for the first time he was, in his own words, "a nameless nobody." A hard-working Scottish immigrant he could have risen to the top of industry or commerce. Instead he devoted his life to immersing himself in the wonders of nature and worked tirelessly to protect the Yosemite and countless other places, overcoming many challenges and set backs. It is in the spirit of Muir that we forge on, against the odds, to independently produce new opera. Many opera companies will not take risks on new works or new talent. Though, like Muir, we have formed a coalition of devoted collaborators and friends that get going when the going gets tough to see that the vision of this project reaches fruition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
