About this project
3K TWILL CARBON FIBER, 6061-T6 ALUMINIUM, CERAMIC GRINDER
Premium materials used to make a high quality and long lasting grinder that will look stunning in your home.
It's all about beauty in design. A few years back, I was in the market for a salt and pepper grinder as a gift for my wife. After spending weeks on the internet and in retail stores, I was surprised to find that there was nothing that had a clean minimalist aesthetic while still being made from premium materials. Hence, the Karbon Mill was born.
With a design philosophy of being true to the material and keeping the aesthetic clean and minimal, we set out to develop a mill from naturally beautiful materials.
Striking the right balance of textures and weighting, we refined each of the primary components until the Karbon Mill felt just right in our hands. Through an iterative design process we meticulously dialed in the tolerances of each part for a final result of impeccable craftsmanship.
The end result of our design efforts is what we hope will be a welcome addition to kitchens around the globe.
In addition to the clean minimalist design, we wanted the Karbon Mill to be made with long lasting premium materials that are more common in aerospace and the exotic car world than our kitchens. We set out to design a long lasting product. And what we hope will be the last set of mills you ever need to purchase.
We chose carbon fiber as the main housing for the mill for its striking detail and depth when held in your hands. The body and knob are manufactured from a precision 3K carbon fiber weave with a matte finish. This allows us to use thinner walled material increasing holding volume while maintaining strength and minimizing weight. We've also integrated machined billet 6061-T6 grade aluminum components, anodized for anti-corrosion, long durability and great strength to weight properties. The rotational interface between the Head and Body is machined from a low friction material called Polyoxymethylene (POM). The CrushGrind® mechanism we are using is one of the best on the market employing Ceramic and Stainless Steel components to ensure anti-corrosion and long lasting performance.
The burr grinder has an adjustable head to allow you to dial in your preferred grind setting for your Pepper, Salt and other spices. Simply adjust the bottom knob and grind multiple spices such as tumeric, mustard seeds, chili, peppercorns, sea salt, kosher salt, coriander, fennel, fenugreek, cumin and much more. Dried herbs and spices contain ethereal oils that hold all the flavors. If the spice or herb is stored as powder, these volatile oils will evaporate quickly rendering the taste of the original spice or herb very weak. Thus, grinding spices right before use ensures peak fresh flavor.
When making your pledge select the number of Karbon Mills you want. To upgrade from the 8.5" mill to the 12" just add the appropriate amount to your pledge. Your color selection will be taken at the end of the campaign when we send out the information survey. If you want a larger quantity of Karbon Mills for your restaurant or as gifts, simple use the "Three" pledge group and add $115 per extra 8.5" mill or $135 per 12" mill. For example if you wanted six 12" mills the total pledge amount would be $815.
Tensen Design provides product design and development services for companies that want to bring their products to market. Based out of Toronto, Canada we have been in the industrial design business for over a decade helping innovators bring their dreams to reality. As a seasoned design firm, yes we went there, we have experienced the trials and tribulations in designing and manufacturing products. We understand that not everything goes according to plan in the production process. We follow our product design method to carefully mitigate and minimize the risks that can rear their heads along the way to delivering the Karbon Mill to you in a timely manner.
A big thanks goes to Mike Mercuri, www.mercuristudios.com for putting the video together for us.
Over the past few months we have been meticulously working on the details and tolerances of each component in order to achieve the right balance of weight, texture, finishes and performance.
Risks and challenges
Over the past few months we have been short listing to verify our machine shop fabricators and suppliers for the Karbon Mill. Through many prototype runs, sample ordering, incoming inspections with critical feedback on any non-conformance issues identified, we feel extremely confident that we will produce the Karbon Mill as planned. A key component of the product development methodology is in the procurement process planning. Through our due diligence in this process we will deliver the Karbon Mill to your home in a timely manor.
We hope you are as excited about the Karbon Mill as we are. With your pledge we know that you will love the fit, finish and quality of the Karbon Mill in your hands.
