The Premise of the story:

After two decades in Israel, American born and bred Victoria still struggles to make peace with her relocation to Israel. She constructs a purposefully insular life in a coastal community analogous to the one she’d expected to live back in the United States, replete with conventional activities associated with American suburbia and expat friends that share the same acerbic, oftentimes critical, attitude to their surroundings. Cracks in this bubble-like existence begin to emerge with her elder child’s induction into the Israeli Defense Forces, and a succession of unexpected events, ultimately collapse the fragile equilibrium she's managed to attain, crushing any remaining pretense of ambivalence toward her adopted country and forcing her to reassess her allegiances.

The Story of Israel that isn't told

Count to a Thousand isn't my story, but it's definitely informed by it. By fictionalizing what I know best, I was able to incorporate the stories of many expat women just like myself; capturing their very different experiences, the various degrees to which they have, or have not been able to assimilate, and the reasons why some will stay for the duration while others will, probably, eventually choose to leave.

Count to a Thousand is the story of what life is really like in modern-day Israel for expatriates who've chosen, for one reason or another, to make their lives here. Some, like myself, have come here for love; others inspired by Zionistic fervor, affinity for the Jewish homeland, or just for the adventure. All of us happened into a lifetime commitment brimming with enormous challenges we wouldn't have faced back in our native homelands. This story explores the challenges of negotiating daily life in a foreign language, coping with social mores and a dramatically different culture, and dealing with the reality of a geographic location fraught with inalienable difficulties and sorrows the likes of which we wouldn't have encountered in the lives we abandoned. At the same time, it tells the story of personal triumphs, of the universal bonds of love and friendship, of family ties and the attachment to a country-- this unique place we now call home.

First Testimonials:

What a moving book! This intimate look at an expat's life in Israel, at what it means to connect to one place while remembering life in another, is revealing and gripping, both. We all wonder where we belong, and here is a  beautiful story speaking to those issues of identity and place, with insight and honesty. This is a curl up and read it kind of book that you'll immediately want to share.

Robin Black, Author of Life Drawing

How do you make a place your home, especially when everything about it is foreign to you?  In Igra’s exotic, lovely novel, an American expat in Israel discovers what to keep, what to let go of and how to change. Thrilling and fascinating.

Caroline Leavitt, New York Times Bestselling author of Pictures of You and Cruel Beautiful World

Project Goal: $2500

The official project goal will cover many of the charges involved in publishing this book including editing, formatting for both electric and print publication, and my gorgeous book cover. If I succeed in reaching this goal, I will, most significantly, know that my book is out there being read!! I'm hoping you'll buy a copy for yourself and another for a friend.

Stretch Goal: An additional $2500 would cover the original printing run for the paperback version and, of course, mean an even bigger readership. That would be so wonderful!

Risks and challenges

Count to a Thousand is currently in the final stages of editing and formating. It's scheduled for publication (both the ebook and the paperback) this summer, 2018.

I don't foresee any reason it won't come out on time and I'm hoping for an early Summer, rather than late Summer, release so that I can get it into the hands of my readers as quickly as possible!
