Punk is getting OLD and it has a history. As with many modern genres of music, it has morphed and expanded into not just a type of music but a lifestyle, belief system and community. The history of Detroit Punk is riddled with infamous bands, world class DIY punk venues, legendary gigs and one of a kind characters....some who are gone, yet many who are still crucial members of the DIY Punk scene here in Detroit. From all of this, many current and thriving scenes in Detroit have sustained, branched off and formed....and one of them is ours!!
The Precinct is the building and our members are The Splatter Punks on Junction!
Our goal is to sustain our DIY venue, recording studio, practice studio and artist studios for our members, out of The Precinct. Though we have been able to operated for 3 years now, hosting local, national and international DIY punk bands, we are in danger of loosing our space. The building that houses us is in an area of Detroit that is quickly gentrifying. Our landlord, who has never upgraded, let alone maintained the building is raising our rent and that means money that we don't have if we wish to sustain the space. As with many artists and musicians, we are starving. We book shows and create music because we love it and because we REALLY want to make Detroit a destination for touring punk bands....but there is no money in running a DIY venue and it has been hard for our members to maintain the space. Along with getting our building up to code, we strive to make The Precinct self sustainable through member donations, a Precinct T-shirts and record distro and fund raising events. To do this, we must first buy a building of our own. Yet another financial mountain of insurmountable proportions for the Splatter Punks on Junction.
Help us make our mark on the future and add to the history of Punk. After all, we are real Detroit punks, fighting for freedom in a fucked up world!
Risks and challenges
As with many groups , we are compiled of an array of different personalities, backgrounds, age groups and....commitment levels. If successful, one of our biggest challenges will be managing this group of individuals to work towards the same goal, sustaining the space. We will implement clear roles in our management system, clear guidelines for members and transparent accounting, making managing the group much more simple.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
