About

Campbell Street Collective Presents: H.P. Lovecraft's "The Curse of Yig" Featuring Freight Train Rabbit Killer...

"The Curse of Yig" is the first project from Campbell Street Collective, and we could not be more excited to bring it to you! This Kickstarter Campaign is a pre-sale for the vinyl release scheduled for mid- October.

Click here for a sneak preview:

The Project:

The project started by a chance thumbing through a well-worn dollar copy of Lovecraft short stories a little over a year ago. After a quick read, the project just seemed to take shape. Without question, the "apocalyptic doom blues" duo Freight Train Rabbit Killer, who has been beating scorched-earth sized trails out of Kansas City, was the band to provide the score. They agreed, and we created a live reading at "Tick Fest" in the summer of 2017. A year, and a long recording session in St. Paul later and "The Curse of Yig" is ready for listeners.

In addition to the audio side, we are incredibly excited to announce that the cover will be an original painting created for the project by Amy Abshier. The look, feel, and beauty mixed with sorrow of her work perfectly mirrors and compliments the tension and madness of Lovecraft's work.

I cannot imagine a more talented group of people to be lucky enough to work with on this project, and now the work is ready to be unleashed on the public.

The Campaign:

We are using this Kickstarter campaign as a way to fund our vinyl release. The proceeds from these pre-sale purchases will be used to complete our first run pressing on vinyl.

In order to make the pre-sale pressings unique, we will be pressing them on a Green/ Grey vinyl, no future pressings will use the same vinyl color.

We all believe in this project. It's weird. It's pretty hard to categorize. But, we cannot wait to let you get your ears on it. Thank you so much for helping us make this happen, directly from the artists involved, to you.

The Crew:

Freight Train Rabbit Killer

If you haven't gotten to see Freight Train Rabbit Killer live yet, you are missing out. They not only deal in giant sounds created on handmade instruments, but they embody characters that they have created. (Check out the comic they released last year) Currently, they are headed to Europe for a 3 week tour, and then will be back in the states to release the last installment of their four part 7" series on Haymaker Records.

Amy Abshier:

My first thought concerning artwork to accompany this project was Amy. Her work conveys more emotion that I can describe, so I'll leave the description to her...

"Most of my works are painted as a mimicry of traditional portraiture, but are (as I see them) vehicles to another concept entirely. Almost all of them have a very tongue-in-cheek wryness about them as I explore themes ranging from self-image issues to historical oddities to the dissection of fairy tales and popular culture. They differ in emotion; some are just silly, while others are plainly macabre, but they are all simple illustrations to the subtle narratives underneath." -Amy

Andrew Crowley

Andrew has been working with Freight Train Rabbit Killer on all four of their "Wake, Snake, Death, Dance" 7in releases, recording, mixing, and mastering each at Organica Recording in St. Paul MN.

He has a laundry list of credits ranging from Producer, Engineer, Mixer, Performer, and Composer, and has been personally shaping this record to blow your mind. (Don't believe me? Take another listen to the preview clip at the top of the page...)

The Story:

This is the story of a family moving west during the land rush days of Oklahoma. Our characters are homesteaders not quite alone in the American west, but certainly isolated several miles from their nearest neighbor. The distinctive difference between them and the countless number of "Boomers" and "Sooners" that settled the territory is a phobic fear of snakes on the part of Walker Davis, the more skiddish of protagonist pair. This overriding fear becomes an issue as Walker hears of the local Native legends of "Yig," a snake god in the mold of Quetzalcoatl.

This story finds Lovecraft working with Zealia Bishop, and leaving the hallowed grounds of his beloved Providence for the red dirt and dust of Oklahoma, and adding to his legendary Cthulhu mythos with new deities inspired by the Mayan and Aztec pantheon. This story and a handful of others (which we may plan on exploring later) really serve as a second act to Lovecraft's work and an interesting extension of his already expansive universe of otherworldly creatures.

We are all really excited to get the opportunity to bring this story to you. We've worked hard to try and make it a different experience than you normally find etched into wax. So please, relax, turn up the volume, throw on a pair of good headphones and get lost in the cylopean wastes of the early American west with us.

    Project Leader

Alright, so Campbell Street Collective and Freight Train Rabbit Killer have decided to make this possible.

For an outlandish pledge of $1500, the artists involved in this project will narrate and score your original short story.

So here's the catch. This has to be your original short story. You must own the copyright on the story you choose. The story cannot be over 10 pages (this should come in roughly at 40 minutes).

Alright, so what does this entail? We will approach the material in the same way that we approached Yig. First, we will record the narration, then the text and narration will be given to the fellas in Freight Train Rabbit Killer. They will then compose and record an original score for the project.

You will receive a high quality non-compressed audio file of the project. The pledge includes all time and money spent on preparation and recording. However, due to budgets, final decision on all edits and creative issues will be reserved by CSC and FTRK.

We will begin work on your project after the completion of the Kickstarter campaign, and will complete the project within 1 year.
