What is SunStash?
SunStash is a powerful, portable Solar charging platform that incorporates the high output charge and portable convenience of an enhanced version of the original SunVolt and takes it to a whole new level with its new, efficient and high capacity Lithium Polymer based power pack. The resulting product is a new, more powerful, power "stash", capable of storing an incredible amount of energy, which can be used to charge a wide variety of devices from smart phones to laptops.
With power grids being stretched to the limits and record breaking storms becoming more and more dangerous, having a side stash of charging power is not only a good idea, but should be an essential part of our emergency planning.
What makes SunStash so great?
The Secret Sauce is the Customized Case: Portable Solar chargers have been in vogue of late and there are several alternatives out there. While everyone seems to get how to design the charging part of the system, the carrying case always seems to be a last second afterthought. In reality, the difference in charging efficiency between a well set-up / aimed solar panel and one propped up against a rock can be in excess of 50% or more! With SunStash's case, efficiency is maximized by providing a simple, yet precise method to optimize the panel angle to the sun regardless of time of day.

Despite being powerful enough to charge all your Gadgets (smartphones, dumb phones, MP3 players, GPS receivers, etc), it also has a high powered port that can charge higher voltage devices such as Laptops and 12v vehicle accessories that you already own (via the included Power Port Adapter). It can even charge two gadgets or a gadget and a PC at the same time!
Simplicity in Use: We have made the SunStash so easy to use even a four year old can use it (literally). With the removeable pack pre-installed, simply set up the panel and point it at the sun. Even checking the current battery capacity only requires pressing a button. Not too shabby!
Power That You Can Bring With You: The SunStash's portable power pack is so small, thin and lightweight, that you can bring it with you wherever you go. It easily fits in backpacks, purses, duffle bags, you name it! Who knew 16,000 mAh could be so portable!
Portable Power has limitless uses?
I'm sure everyone could think of a million ways that portable power would fit into your life; however, we decided to point out a few of the slam dunk applications for you!
- Emergency Power. Clearly the most obvious use of a powerful Solar power system like SunStash would be as a source of backup power. As power grids worldwide get stretched thinner and storms get stronger, most of us have experienced the inconvenience of a multiday power outage. With SunStash, you will be prepared!
- RV / Camping Trips. Camping trips would be another obvious application for SunStash. While camping trips are great, it's hard to charge up your electronics (e.g. phone, GPS, etc) while out in the bush. SunStash would be an invaluable addition to your critical supplies (especially your GPS receiver so you can find your way home!).
- Sailing/Boating. No better conditions for solar charging than being out on the water. Simply set SunStash out during the day and fully charge your electronics at night. A marriage made in heaven.
- Rural Locations. Getting away from it all, doesn't necessarily have to mean the power grid too! Take SunStash with you to your next mountain / rural getaway and be prepared with a little stored power for those "just in case" moments.
How much power is 16,000mAh?
Power ratings can be confusing. 16,000mAh of power can be expressed in many different ways. The base formula for power is Watts = Amps X Volts. Our power pack is stacked with powerful, thin, lithium polymer batteries which total 16Ah @ 3.7v. This rates to 59.2Wh (16Ah X 3.7v). Each device that you use and want to charge has a battery rating printed on it. For example, the iPhone 5 uses a 1400mAh battery (e.g. 1.4A). So in theory, our charger could charge the iPhone 5 over eleven times (16/1.4 = 11.4). Of course you need to factor in overhead, but even at 80% efficiency, it still equates to over 9 times.
Multitasking with SunStash.
The SunStash power pack was engineered to be able to do something few other power packs (and people) can do well; Multitask. This includes:
- Charge itself while charging a Device: The SunStash power pack can output power to charge your device, while the Solar panel (or wall charger) is inputing power to recharge the power pack. It does both functions simulataneously without missing a beat!
- Charge two devices at once through the USB port: The USB port puts off an impressive 2.1A of current. More than enough to charge multiple devices at the same time via our included port splitter.
- Charge simultaneously at different voltages: SunStash can even output one voltage from its high volt port (e.g. 19v) and another out of its low volt port (5v) at the same time.
What is included with each SunStash Kit?
Every SunStash Kit includes the following:
- --> One (1) 10W or 15W Monocrystalline solar panel (depending on platform selected)
--> One (1) Custom designed carrying case tailored to the selected solar panel size
- --> One (1) 16,000mAh (60W) Lithium Polymer power pack. Each pack has outputs for both Gadgets (USB) and higher voltage devices.
--> USB Splitter Cable. A splitter cable that enables the USB output port to be split to charge two gadgets at once.
--> High Output Port Cable + Adapters. A cable which connects to the high output charging port of the SunStash power pack. Also included is 10 adapter plugs for many popular laptop/netbook computers.
--> AC Charger for Power Pack. A traditional wall charger is included as a back-up alternative method to charging the power pack.
--> One Car Vehicle Adapter Cable. Allows you to use most all vehicle power accessories with the Power Pack.
--> Instruction Card. A detailed set of instructions will be included with the system.
How Long Will SunStash Charge My Laptop
We wanted to dedicate a section of our Kickstarter page to the SunStash's high power laptop charging port. As you can imagine, Laptops come in a variety of shapes and sizes all which are accompanied by diverse charging requirements. The best way to figure out how much laptop charge you could get out of a fully charged SunStash power pack (60W), is to consult your laptops power supply sticker. The rating (in Watts) will give you an idea of how long the SunStash will be able to dispense power to it. For example, if your power supply is 45W, than than a fully charged SunStash would be able to provide about the equivalent of 80 minutes of plug-in charge to it (e.g. 60W/45W * 60 = 80 minutes). If on the other hand, it's a 90W power supply, than SunStash will be able to charge about 40 minutes of plug-in charge capability (60W / 90W * 60 = 40 minutes).
10W versus 15W Panel Size
The SunStash Charging Kit comes available in two different panel sizes; 10W and 15W. As you can imagine, the bigger the panel, the more charge that can be extracted from the sun. Below please find the size specification and charging times for each option:
10W Panel: The smaller of the two panels puts of a maximum of 10 watts of power under ideal conditions. This panel measures 13 x 12 x 1.5 inches (330 x 305 x 38mm) in size and typically will charge the SunStash power pack to 80% or more in 6-10 hours depending on the conditions.
15W Panel: The larger of the two panels packs 50% more power at a maximum of 15 watts under ideal conditions. This panel measures 17 x 12 x 1.5 inches (430 x 305 x 38mm) in size and typically will charge the SunStash power pack to 80% in 4-8 hours.
SunStash Manufacturing Plan
All the pictures on the project page and in the video are of our fully functioning SunStash production prototypes. Over the past several months, we have worked closely with our trusted manufacturing and design partner (in Taiwan) to polish every detail of the complete system to get it to its current production-ready state. At this point the panel, charging circuit, power pack core and carrying case (the main components of the system) are finished, fully functional and ready for mass production. All the factory needs is for me to say "go" (and send them a sizeable payment, of course)!
With your help on launching the first production run, the SunStash will soon become a reality. The last step is to send payment to the factory to buy the materials in bulk (in order to get economies of scale) and finalize the tooling for the production run. The tooling will take 2-3 days to complete and the end-to-end production of the turnkey system will require approximately 21 additional days. We have committed to bringing the first 1,250 pieces of this system in by air, so delivery will only take 2-3 business days to arrive. In other words, we should be able to ship this system to you within 3-4 weeks after the project concludes!
Risks and challenges
SunStash is more frequently used during the spring and summer seasons. As such, we have committments from our factories for enough material to build 1,250 of these systems for quick delivery (within 30 days). Subsequent batches will take additional time as the materials need to once again be procured and some have longer lead times. As such, we have adjusted our delivery dates for the orders in excess of 1,250 to reflect longer delivery times of approximately 120 days. The delivery times for your pledge basket will be clearly displayed to represent accurate delivery times.
Each SunStash system has some light final assembly and testing prior to shipping to the end user. The entire process takes only a few minutes to fill each order. FedEx has committed preferential rates for their ground shipping class and has provided us with software to easily handle the shipping, tracking and notification processes of shipping.
FedEx has provided us with preferential rates on their FedEx International Priority delivery service. Transit times takes typically around 3 business days to arrive including customs clearance. Of course, this can vary from country to country, but overall, this is the norm. Please be sure to note the international shipping premium that must be added to international orders. Failure to include this amount, could result in shipping delays.
