my name is alxndr jones. i'm an illustrator and designer in minneapolis. for the last four years i have done an annual project called illustrated advent and this year, the fifth year, i want to do something different and invite you to come along.
over ten years ago, a youth minister challenged a group of us to read through the book of luke during the season of advent because each is framed in 24. 24 chapters in the book of luke. 24 days in advent. reading one chapter a day from december first until christmas eve. read the entire story of jesus and complete it just in time for his birth.
now, five years ago i reframed that challenge. instead of just reading the passages, i decided to respond with illustrations and visually journal my way through luke and illustrated advent was born. what started as a personal exercise on a blog has grown to its own website and online community walking through the gospel together, every december.
the first four years were great and i am excited for this, year five. to celebrate five years of illustrated advent, i'm publishing a coffee table book, full of illustrated scenes from each chapter for luke. i've started in on the sketches and i'm more excited about this year’s illustrated advent than i have ever have been before. i promise this will be a book for your advent and christmas traditions and to pass down from one generation to the next.
i've found a manufacturer for the books and have begun to illustrate year five, but here’s where i need your help. to publish such an extensive project takes a lot of time and costs money, so please join in this kickstarter to help make this happen. you can check out previews of the book, reward levels, and more information in the description below.
thanks for all the support the last four years and making year five possible. please share this project with anyone you think might be interested and lets make illustrated advent 5 awesome together.
you can follow along during advent at illustratedadvent.com
illustrated advent: the illustrated gospel of luke, the coffee table book. the plan is publish a beautiful 12 in x 12 in hardcover book with an embossed white illustrated advent logo in the lower right corner, as shown below. the cover is a beautiful grey cloth that is bound and ready to last for years.
roughly 60 pages printed on 100# silk paper. with paper like that, these illustrations will take center stage with each spread open. each chapter has a full two-page spread with a detailed illustration of a scene from that particular chapter, as shown in the examples below.
THE [OTHER] REWARDS
every bit helps when making a project like this happen. thanks so much for your support!
"CAN I ORDER MULTIPLE COPIES?"
yes! please send me an email, or message on kickstarter, to coordinate making that possible. my email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
if we can hit $8500, i'll give another additional option [after the project is complete] for a kickstarter exclusive print. what does that mean? if you have chosen a reward level that includes a print, you'll now be able to choose from 4 options instead of the original three. if you pledge at a reward level that includes the set of prints, you now get 4 prints instead of the original three!
if we can hit $9000, everyone that has pledged $25 or more will receive a complete set of 24 illustrated advent mini-prints. these things are mini, for sure! clocking in at 1.1 in x 2.75 in, this set of prints is very portable and will be great for walking through advent in future years.
if we can hit $9500, anyone with a pledge $55 and above will receive a handmade wooden display stand for their set of mini-prints. this is great way to display the set, one day at a time, on your desk, bookshelf, piano, kitchen counter, or anywhere else you look daily.
now, if we can hit the massive mark of $10000, i will get the #illustratedAdvent logo tattooed [sorry mom!] on my body. this one is kind of a "shoot for the moon" goal, but hey! you never know! location of tattoo: TBD
if we go higher than $10000, I'm not sure what we will do! maybe a party with cool matching t-shirts or something like that. i guess we will build that bridge when we come to it!
Risks and challenges
the biggest risk and challenge for this project is the actual production. making sure that books are up to the high standard the illustrated advent audience is accustom to. it might take a little longer, but if we are going to do it ... we are for sure going to do it right.
i know there is a concern about timing. i will say it now, at this point the printed book won't be done before advent or christmas. the challenge with doing a advent based project is that fact that no one really thinks about advent until the season is upon us. i appreciate your understanding and support!
for this project, we will only be shipping the book in the united states.
as with every year of illustrated advent, there is the general challenge of getting every illustration for every chapter finished and posted everyday! its a challenge i am familiar with and, with the last few years under my belt, i feel confident in completing the challenge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
