Update: We've hit our campaign goal, help us reach our stretch goal of $15,000 to cover the production of the album!
In December of 2015, I returned to my home in Cambridge, MA. I had spent the previous three years touring around the globe with Bombino, the Tuareg guitar hero from Agadez, Niger. We had been on the grand caravan performing in twenty five countries from Rome to Rio de Janeiro, the Sahel Desert to New Zealand, Zagreb to Carnegie Hall. Performing and collaborating with Bombino was a transcendent and spiritual experience that has infused my consciousness, songwriting, guitar playing, and worldview. While on the journey and since returning home I have written a collection of new material that has become this new album.
Over the last two years I have been bringing these songs to life with the Wylder family, a group of dear friends and musical kindred spirits. In between shows, we spent eight days making this record at Eyeland Studio at the Columbus Theatre, home of our dear friends, The Low Anthem. The Wylder family on this album includes Rob Flax (violin, synthesizers, vocals), Lucy Clifford (bass), Jeremy Gustin (drums), Bridget Kearney (vocals), Zamar Odongo (vocals), Alexander Anderson (organ, synthesizers), Isa Burke (vocals) and a couple more special guests! Overdub sessions and mixing have been completed at Zumix and Wondersmith Audio and engineered by the fantastic Mr. Fox (Dan Fox).
This album is a reflection of the world we’ve been born into, one filled with supernatural beauty and incomprehensible struggle. My social and environmental activism work has taken me to some severely challenged places in recent years. I’ve been to territories that have been colonized and occupied in the Middle East, North and West Africa, the South Pacific and Standing Rock here at home. I have experienced beauty and creative spirit rise up in the face of darkness and adversity all around the world and it is the most life-affirming feeling I have witnessed. These experiences are the lifeblood of this album. This record has become the artifact at the unique intersection of these moving events in my life. The music weaves together American folk and rock with sensibilities from the Sahara Desert, think Andrew Bird meets Ali Farka Toure, Pete Seeger and Talking Heads. Mother Earth is at its center, surrounded by stories of love, conflict, change and dreams.
You can be a part of our story and help us complete the record!
About the Costs:
The total expenses will be $20,000 which cover the recording, mixing, mastering, manufacturing, band, and travel. Our first goal is to raise $10,000 and our stretch goal will be $15,000.
Risks and challenges
Music is one of life’s greatest gifts. We are called to be artists, not for financial gain, but to share our creative mojo, to reflect, resist, uplift, love, and transcend. Nearly all the recording has been completed and we are so inspired to share the new sounds with the world! We need $10,000 to complete the mixing, mastering, and manufacturing. This is an all or nothing campaign to complete the album; we need to meet our goal in order to receive your contributions. Please share with your friends and family. With your support we will release the record in April 2018!
